Lotus Elise and Exige set to receive V6 power?
2011 Lotus Elise Facelift - 16.02.2010

Hard-working spies caught a Lotus Exige that sounded very similar to an accompanying Evora nearby. In addition to the sound, widened wheel arches were noticed. Although not measured, the rear wheels appeared to sit slightly further back, suggesting a longer wheelbase.

The Exige is currently powered by a Toyota-sourced 1.8-litre four-cylinder. At its most hardcore (as used by the supercharged Exige 265E) it makes 197 kW (264 bhp/ 268 PS) and 249 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. Now it seems its days are over.

Big brother Evora is about to donate his own Toyota-based V6 powerplant to the Exige as well as the Elise. Although notably heavier, the V6 also comes with more power and torque to the tune of 206 kW (276 bhp/ 280 PS) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft).

Rumours of such a marriage first surfaced last autumn but did not translate into anything concrete. Apparently management changes at Lotus put the project on hold until certain financial obligations were cleared. The car was seen less than two weeks ago.

Note: pictures depict Elise facelift which was released earlier this year.

More power! Not a bad Idea!

It wouldn't make any sense. This is Lotus, the king of lightweight agility. Fitting their lightweight sports cars with a much heavier V6 makes no sense at all. It would cause a handling problem similar to that of the Elise-based Tesla Roadster, weighed down by batteries and hindered in the corners - where a Lotus thrives best of all - and described by Mr. Clarkson on TopGear as "A bit like me. Thin at one end, thin(ning) at the other, and with a big fat bit in the middle". Even other companies are choosing to lose cylinders and add forced induction, making this idea of swapping the NA or supercharged I4 with a V6 an even odder move. I think it's just a mule for a future model. Not an Elise/Exige V6. The two don't go together on any level in my head.

I'd drop in a 427ci LS7 mated up to a T56 tranny, put a narrowed Ford 9" in the rear with some wide ET drag radials in the back and call it a day.

you should be able to get more than that, and i doubt two more cylinders will add too much weight.

So not only it accelerate like a supercar, it will (sort of) sound like one too? Lotuses just keep getting better and better.

the power to weight ratio of the v6 is hardley different from the current 4 cylinder, dont forget that lotus havent tuned the new v6 to it maximal potential yet so a further increase to the ratio is obviously on its way. I suspect a minimal increase to 350ps . however all this is just speculation

Today's compact V6s can weight the same as 4 cylinder engines with compressor, and they can give more power, so anyone who thinks it's going to steer worse is wrong.

"add lightness" as Colin Chapman once said. not, add cylinders. Lotus has ALWAYS focused on shaving weight, increasing almost all aspects of the car. More cylinders is just more cylinders.

I think it would be a good idea to a V6 in the Elise. Will make it a nice long distance GT cruiser.

I reckon a nat-asp 2.0L-2.5L 5 cylinder would be good in the Elise/Exige. Something fresh and radical, and most likely more soulful than any four cylinder.

I?d like a v6 in an elise, but I think it doesn?t get prettier with this front and it isn?t that light anymore also.
