European Lotus dealers cease taking orders on the Europa

Lotus will be killing off the Europa.

According to Autoblog.com, Lotus dealers in Europe have already stopped selling the car, which likely means production will end on the Europa by the fall.

Now that Lotus has the Evora, launched last year, it can put an end to the Elise-based Europa which never managed much sales traction.

The Europa was introduced in 2006 and came with a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 200 bhp (149 kW) and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque. It's top trim-level, the SE, was introduced in 2008 and featured 220 bhp with the same amount of torque.

Autoblog posits that the Europa was a temporary measure for Lotus, meant to fill a gap in the marketplace before the introduction of the Evora, while keeping the Elise production line busy. Whatever the case, the Europa never became a hot product and failed to catch on with consumers.

It was always too close to the Elise. Apart form the review on fifth by JP I never heard anything about it.

I'm not surprised. Their "luxury" car - stand-in until the Evora or not - was literally a re-bodied Elise with some creature comforts squeezed into an uncomfortable interior. Not very luxurious. As the article says, it only makes sense now that the Evora exists to kill off a car with no place in the range. Besides, the original Europa was way cooler.

Not surprising... since the Europa is basically a re-bodied Elise lux GT which is replaced (or succeeded) by its higher-performing and more comfortable (better-looking too) brother, the Evora. Nevertheless, good day and goodbye...Europa!
