Toyota FT-86 launch postponed by 2 years
Toyota FT-86 Concept

Yet another delay?

According to a recent report, Toyota's highly anticipated FT-86 has been postponed for two years.

While details are limited, Best Car Magazine is reporting the delay is due to Toyota's rejection of the concept's design. The company also believes a 2011 release would be premature, as economic conditions could result in weak sales.

As we have previously reported, Toyota confirmed they were teaming up with Subaru to develop a new sports car in April 2008. By February 2009, the car was put on hold because of the economic downturn. When August 2009 rolled around, Toyota reversed their decision and green-lighted production. Eventually, the FT-86 concept was unveiled at the Toyota Motor Show in October 2009. By February 2010, rumors surfaced that Toyota had rejected the concept's design - but the company later dismissed those reports.

Will we ever see a production FT-86? We'll have to wait and see.

As excited as I was (past tense) about this car, it has become somewhat of a failure as it seems every day there's another setback or disappointment...

Just like the LFA, it will take 10 years to see production and by that time the competition will have passed it by. Why is Toyota being so cautious about this! Just bring it out. No styling tweaks necessary, this concept looks great. I guess it doesn't look generic and derivative enough for Toyota. The economic downturn excuse doesn't make sense, as people would be looking for cheap ways to have fun.

Good. I hope they scrap it all together. This thing was was making a mockery of Subaru's awesome platform.

Too bad this car wasn't GM idea . It would have gone straight into production 10 seconds after it's conception . Followed by 3 other mechanically identical cars but with different names . The "Badger , Weasel and Gremlin Gravity Defier" .

I believe GM already did that, it was called the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, and Opel GT.

I used to be a Toyota die-hard-fan, but I am so happy I decided to switch to MB some time ago :) I really think Toyota simply does not like cars - they manufacture them, because they are a car manufacturer, but they hardly have any emotions about their products. And that (not their recent quality problems - my RAV4 has been a very good and extremely reliable product) was my main reason to switch.

I agree with you. the last interesting Toyota's was during the mid 90's and that's it,from there they are going from fail to fail!

Well said, I couldn't agree more. I owned an 86 Celica GT and it handled better than my 2002 Honda Civic EX - I owned them at the same time. It all came down to emotion and real engineering. While the new Honda was great, it was also an appliance. The old Celica GT was a true grand tourer, and managed to be quieter on long highway rides than the Civic. Go figure. Now, Toyota is brand for losers, minus the Tacoma TRD pickups, there the only thing that is remotely tied to their past greatness, like SR-22 Engines, and simple, lightweight, rigid chassis. I could go on, but you already know.

Have heard even the all new Mazda MX-5 or Miata is also facing a delay...the Japanese are not Stupid, Just being CAUTIOUS. Many are fearing a GFC II, many think it is here, and the Japanese will not release small volume models while the US economy is STALE!

I believe that amongst the things that they are delaying it because of are the never-ending recalls that have created somewhat a scar in Toyota's reputation. The media butchered those poor things, exaggerating events to the fullest. It'll all be forgotten with time I'm sure, and by then, the FT-86 would mark a new area for Toyota (I hope)

Anything to do with no longer having Lotus Engineering around as Toyota did in the 1980's to help in the handling department? (like they did with the first MR2?)

I have to agree with BDSawicki too... Back in Toyota's heyday they had the MR2 Turbo, Celica Turbo All-trac, and Supra Turbo...all very nice cars that had merit of its own (the Celica All-trac was a rally car for God's Sake!) But they steered off and got bitten by the profit bug and focused on money making SUV's. I mean they had more trucks in their line-up than cars and sports cars. Shame on them...atleast they could've may be thrown in a turbo charged super SUV to keep the blood flowing through the veins!
