Executives will present a proposal to the board of directors in July to kill Mercury

Ford is preparing the ground work for putting an end to the Mercury brand.

According to the report, Ford executives will be presenting a proposal to the company's directors in July to shut down Mercury. The brand is already being starved of models, with two of its current four-vehicle lineup being discontinued next year.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally has been focusing on rebuilding the company's core blue oval (Ford) brand since his tenure began back in 2006 and has sold-off previous assets including Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin. Mulally's leadership is widely credited for helping Ford avoid the bankruptcy fate of the two other Big 3 Detroit automakers - GM and Chrysler.

But Mulally hasn't confirmed the decision, telling reporters in Washington, D.C. earlier this week that the company had no change in its "position about Ford or Lincoln or Mercury."

Sales of the Mercury brand have plummeted 74 percent over the last decade. Last year the brand sold just 92,299 units. Mercury sales peaked way back in 1978 at 579,498 vehicles. Analysts say that Ford has deprived Mercury of models and marketing resources because it never wanted to spend too much money on the brand.

""The brand has been starved for product. It's no secret that the company just wants to polish the Ford oval and rebuild Lincoln," Springfield, Pennsylvania Lincoln-Mercury dealer Stephen Amabile said in the story.

The Mercury brand was created by Edsel Ford, the son of founder Henry Ford, back in 1939. The brand was meant to fill the gap between Ford models and luxury marque Lincoln.

In the past few years the only really positive thing that Mercury has shone to the public was their wisdom in showcasing the very attractive Jill Wagner as the spokesperson in their commercials.

I'm positive they won't drop Lincoln; they won't have any luxury brands left. Mercury should have gone a long time ago; it was in a weird limbo between ford and lincoln. It just shows that car brands named after planets don't do well.

Lincoln? a luxury brand? You should see how they're being used over here. Ford should let it die a merciful death.

Ford let Mercury slip in this shit, they are the only ones who should take the blame. The right thing to do would be to revive the brand and transform it in some kind of Buick fighter but with a little more sportyness.

Amen to this. Mercury could have been a much better brand since its hey day but all Ford ever did was use it as a clone car division...they never gave it character either, not after the Muscle car day(see Cougar XR-7)...all it was, was a Ford with a bit more luxury or a cheaper lincoln with less luxury...and i say this as a Mercury fan.

I actually think this is a good idea. It's hard for Mercury to have an identity in between Ford and Lincoln. I say... keep improving Ford models, and give Lincoln a real identity, and some products that have distinction and real substance.

Thats the exact problem...Mercury might have had a chance...if it was actually given one and not be a clone car company for the last 3 decades.

The bottom of the luxury ladder is the perfect place for Cadillac and Lincoln to fight it out. Oh, wait! They're being eaten alive by the Avalon, Azera, Highlander, Veracruz and....you get the picture.

It's obvious that FoMoCo hasn't cared about Mercury for some time, so why should the public. That being said, I actually think the Milan is better looking than the Fusion. Oh well.

I always wondered why Ford kept Mercury alive. There really was no point to the brand, all of the cars were boring and too similar to their Ford counterparts. If Ford wants to keep Lincoln alive, they better fire all of their designers.

I get the feeling that the 3 big American brands shoudlnt really be in charge over any brand but their own. They are too selfcentered and dont want their other brands to suceed like Mercury for example, i bet it could of had great potential but Ford was too focused on making Ford a good brand to do anything about it.

Its really beginning to seem like it was that way. Good brands went in the shitter because of general laziness. Pontiac was too little too late with the G8 and the solstice, Mercury was just a copy/paste/edit car company only differences were minimal to the interior and exterior. Chrysler did good with Dodge but as much as i love the Charger, Challenger and other cars...never thought about making a good compact FWD car or anything to make them more economical volume sales.

The end of Mercury reflects the death of the middle class in America... We can expect Ford to introduce a new brand of mopeds...
