Bugatti EV prototype developed with 800bhp - report
Bugatti 16C Galibier

Auto Express is reporting that that engineers at Volkswagen-owned Bugatti have developed a running prototype of an all-electric supercar.  The car's alleged 800-horsepower (597-kW, 811-PS) powertrain is comprised of two motors that kick out an instantaneous 2,200 Nm (1623 lb-ft) of torque right from 1 rpm, the magazine claims.

Quoting sources close to Bugatti, Auto Express suspiciously says the car may never be revealed to the public.  The "source" says the vehicle was built as a sandbox for engineers to further examine electric car technology.

Critics will say that it is hard to believe that Bugatti would create a massively powerful supercar and not use it as a public demonstration of the automaker's abilities.  Further, it is unknown why Bugatti would not want to use the car for marketing and brand development purposes.

Problems with the car reportedly have to do with keeping the power under control, and keeping batteries charged with a range longer than "a matter of minutes."  If it were released, one wonders if the car would be revealed as an homage to the Type 56, Bugatti's electric vehicle developed in the 1930s.

veyron is out of fuel after just 7 minutes at full speed - but after 12 minutes of full speed bugatti destroys it?s tires - not to mention the floor which has ground level of just 6 cm in full speed mode

Yes because Veyrons are only ever driven at Max speed. No point making a car capable of anything else.

I think they should make the car run on Unobtanium, all we have to do is kill the indigenous people of Pandora. They should also look into fabricating the entire chassis out of Wishalloy, in order to save weight.

1,600 lbs torque at 1 rpm? Let's go ahead and try to find some rubber that can handle that along with the Unobtanium. Pandora is so screwed.

It's always been easy to make electric vehicles with lots of power/torque. Having a battery arrangement that makes such a vehicle practical, not so simple. If they are running the vehicle that they claim to be, I would bet that its lack of public profile is due to the fact that it's simply a proof of concept for the drivetrain running inside another VAG chassis. One with similar wheelbase and chassis dimensions to what they want to achieve but more space for instrumentation/reconfiguration. Say A6/A8, Panamera type cars.

They are using Bentley Continental GT platform...;)

The Veyron was a proof of concept. Well, it was a "technical exercise" of sorts to see if it could be done.

Don't fall for the marketing BS. The Veyron was a low volume series production vehicle. Specifically a halo vehicle for the group. The fact that they call it a "technical exercise" is nothing but spin. "Proof of concept" is a term used specifically in the design, engineering, manufacturing, business, etc world to do exactly what it says, prove the viability of a concept (concept in it's typical meaning, not as in CoNcEpT kAr). Generally this is before projects get greenlit passed an initial proposal definition/research stage.

This is some interesting news, but not really nearest future, not until scientist find a better way to store electricity. It doesn't work today, but might work in 10 or 20 year. Anyway this is great news about some development stuff

Impressive numbers, but Auto Express have a tendency to get a rumour, call it a "World Exclusive Scoop" and mock up some "World Exclusive pics" themselves. At least, they did a couple of years ago. "Critics will say that it is hard to believe that Bugatti would create a massively powerful supercar and not use it as a public demonstration of the car maker's abilities... use the car for marketing and brand development purposes." - Critics should read the word "PROTOTYPE". Maybe it'll be a concept or something later on.

If it were indeed true that Bugatti made an electric car in the 1930s, it would be a crying shame if VW don't use this great opportunity to put this car into production. Alternative engineering standards are being set now in the Orient and in the States; a European car maker of VW's reputation must not let this opportunity slip to pioneer alternative engineering for the hyper supercar sector for fuel efficiency and environmental reasons!

They need to make it work first.
