Infiniti may also be coming out with a performance model this summer

Infiniti has filed papers with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark both the "IPL" and "Infiniti Performance Line" names.

Infiniti, the premium marque of Japanese automaker Nissan, wants to use the IPL designation to create a sub-brand for performance-oriented cars to compete against the likes of BMW's M division and the Mercedes-Benz AMG brand - the performance divisions of those German automakers.

The trademark is said to also cover performance parts such as turbochargers and superchargers, as well as items like suspension and exhaust components, brakes and sports seats.

Ben Poore, vice president for the Infiniti Business Unit, recently said that Infiniti would be bringing out a performance model sometime this summer but did not offer any further details. Nissan also said at the same time that it was looking to develop more small but high-performing engines through the use of turbochargers.

Infiniti is playing catch-up with its more established competitors - premium brands such as Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi who have a longer history and offer a larger range of products.

you can't compare infiniti to mercedes, bmw or audi...

You're right. None of those German brands can touch Infiniti reliability or value.

Lol 350zed. Infinitis are poorly built, not to mention they don't even come close to the performance of BMWs, Audis or Mercedes. I loved how they try pitting the G37 against the 330 a year after the 330 was out of production. That was after the 335 killed it in all the tests.

Is it only me that IPL just doesn't sound right? Others name, such as F, HSV, VXR, R, RS, RenaultSport, Aero, FPV and others just sound right, but IPL is a bit weird and that is not good in marketing perspective.

I agree. They might have been purposefully trying to avoid the "performance cliches" like R's, X's, RS's, S's, etc. but what they came up with doesn't sound appealing.

There's nothing wrong with the cliches. I personally think that the cliches are rather informative. To anyone in the market for a car that would where the R or RS or other equivalent badge, it is clear that it means race. If Benz was not as established as it is, AMG would simply be a patch of meaningless letters. I suppose M is on the border (Motorsport), but Audi S and RS is far better (Sport and Renn (Race) Sport). The best is the Gumpert nomenclature: the Apollo, Apollo S, and Apollo R. All very clear, and companies can learn from that.

...seems that no one remembers the articles about an agreement of cooperation signed between Daimler (Mercedes Benz) and Nissan-Renault. The agreement stated there would be 4 cylinder and V8 engines from Mercedes Benz used in Infiniti cars...

Makes sense they had to come up with an "Infiniti" name to sell all those NISMO parts they have for the Skyline (aka G series in the US). INMO just doesn't sound right.

They have their work cut out for them if they are going to match the M machines, the C63, and the new RSs (RS5 for sure). I think Infiniti has a better chance than Lexus.

Not really. The IS-F has proved itself to be a worthy competitor to the C63/M3. And seeing the LF-A, who knows what we can expect next from Lexus.

No need for a new trademark, just fit the new M56 engine on the G37 coupe

Easy, just install Nissan's 3.8 Twin Turbo V6 with its dual clutch autoshift gearbox from the GTR in its FX model with a flashy exterior or a bespoke interior and you'll get an ML63 AMG, Cayenne Turbo or X5/X6 M rival.

Infiniti already has "S". Why is this necessary?
May 26, 2010 10:47 am

The Infiniti S is not really a S version so much as a sport package. This IPL program is more along the lines of AMG/M/RS. The S is more like the M-Sport package or S-Line trim.

It's funny how someone on here was saying people on this blog should come back to reality and stop talking about turbos and engine options. Hilarious. Why not offer a turbo? it's what people want... it's great for marketing. Infinit's already have some of the best engines on the market, can you imagine them with forced induction. At the right price, these new cars will be a damn hit.

They aren't bad, but saying best is a stretch. Infiniti still hasn't been able allocate the power in their engines as efficiently as other manufacturers. Doing something like this is good news though. Shows us that manufacturers aren't as scared as they once were and are doing better.

The VQ series engines have been bullet proof since the old Maxima days. They've been on the 10 Best Engines list for almost 15 years straight. I think they are arguably some of the best V6's out there. Maybe not the most efficient in power output, but super solid.

If I had a choice, I'd take any of the BMW V6's over any Infiniti V6. I still think Infiniti has a long ways to go to even be in the same league as BMW, Audi and Mercedes. BWM and Mercedes have long careers backing their success, while Audi has only been a good car for less than a decade. Infiniti should focus less on the cluster fu** of electronics inside (and people say BMW's iDrive is confusing... holy crap...) and focus more on performance, I'd give them another thought.

Ya I totally agree. BMW engines are tops in my book. I have first experience with retarded electronics issues in Infiniti cars, but BMW has more than its fair share of those as well. And I love the idrive, it's very... logical. I think people just can't wrap their heads around the fact that you can control everything with one button. It's no different than a mouse.

Sounds like a computer software company. Regardless, this will be a proper competitor to M and AMG, not like those hoodies at F.

Just like Lexus ISF cannot keep up with M3, C63, rs4, etc on a track day. This infiniti will not keep up with Benz, audi, bmw, etc.

You're forgetting one thing though... GT-R. Nissan has the tech, and if they wanted to compete with the Germans, they could. I think GT-R exemplifies that.
May 26, 2010 8:10 pm
 Xenicide Xenicide
Making a GT-R like vehicle under the Infiniti badge would be suicide. First, the price would definitely increase 30-50% easily. Second, most people with that money would rather buy a more "prestigious" car. Not to mention with the GT-R SpecV and whatever other bs models they are adding are already hovering around $130,000, even more if you add the dealer mark up that increased the $75,000 tag on the base GT-R to over $100,000, the cars are not that appealing. Unless you're a big track person. People would rather spend the money on a Maserati (don't know why... overpriced underperformers) or Aston Martin.
May 26, 2010 9:29 pm
 Iconic Iconic
It's not about building a GT-R like vehicle, because that would be stupid and would never be done. The GT-R competes with the 911 GT2. Point is, Infiniti has a better shot than Lexus does at going after the comparable German performance cars. Lexus just essentially stuffed a big ass V8 in the IS. They don't have the turbo tech and experience that Nismo has. I'm excited as hell to see what they actually put out.

Xenicide, people buy Maseratis because they're pretty. And less obvious than a Ferrari.

I just hope they don't sell a re-bodied GT-R. That would be cheating, for a start... I don't know how much prestige Infiniti has in the US, but they're very new over here in Europe, which won't help them fight against the Germans at any rate. What they need to do is "do a Pagani" - IPL need their first car to blow the doubters away and steal all the headlines (and preferably looks and sounds great) and then try not to make a disappointing follow-up. Lexus F's first car wasn't bad, but not really any more than an Interesting Alternative. The G35 IPL (for example) needs to thoroughly beat that for a start. Of course, it would be good for them to borrow from/ work with NISMO, at least until they've got their feet on the ground, as they've been modding - and, of course, racing - Nissans for decades to great effect. I would imagine the Infinitis having smoother V8s rather than turbo V6 engines though. Or maybe a V8 turbo :-) For the M at least.

I am guessing that IPL stands for Infiniti Performance Limited or League? Not exactly AMG is it? Even Lexus are smart with F (meaning Fast?); it sounds purposeful but IPL? A marketing nightmare that's for sure!

IPL sounds more Infiniti Performance League than a tuning brand name! Keep it simples! Use one letter like Lexus did, for example.

The name sounds very "aftermarket-ish"... How about "Essence"(based on the award-winning coupe concept)?
