Street Drag Race: Bugatti Veyron Vs Nissan GT-R R35 [video]

Dragtimes.info, a Russian media outfit, filmed this David vs Goliath battle between a Bugatti Veyron and a Nissan GT-R. While on paper this might seem like a grossly unfair comparison, however, the GT-R brand has always benchmarked itself not only against potential peers but stronger opponents as well. The same goes for the current R35 model.

Although it's unknown if the GT-R is heavily tuned, it's hard to imagine that a 357 kW (474 bhp / 485 PS) V6 twin turbo can compete against something packing 1001 PS (736 kW / 987 bhp), yet the GT-R has a sub-4 second 0-100 km/h sprint time. Plus its AWD system and twin-clutch are said to be exceptionally responsive. Interestingly, the Veyron also comes with AWD and a double-clutch transmission, just like the Japanese missile. Unfortunately for Godzilla it has a sub-3 second sprint time.

And that last part is clearly demonstrated on the video as the two giants take on an almost-empty Russian freeway under the cover of darkness. Watch the duel play itself over and over during several runs ranging from standstill to running starts. Make sure the speakers are switched on as well.

The GTRs in the video are run by some of the guys at Dragtimes, and they've been unhappy lately that we wouldn't deliver parts for them to "raise the boost" after they finished 1-2-3 in the unlimited ... at this point, not really sure what each car is running, but Tym has been working long nights with the owners of 2 of the Switzer cars there, and they've been making good, SAFE progress that is not endangering the engine.

Damn I'm jelous of those guys, so the first GT-R was a stock one and the second was a tuned one?

Wow, those GT-R's are superb. It can (almost) keep up with a Veyron! (Y) @ 1:35, showoff.

This isn't P800, it's custom tuning, much better then Switzer...that is the information of video...LOOOL!

They are indeed using different tuning than the Switzer P800 ... also running race gas and some different fuel stuff as well. As above - we were the heroes when the same guys finished 1-2-3. Now they did not win at the last event, and Switzer is the pits. It is always like this: people like to win. When we send the next Switzer cars to Russia, we will again be heroes. Then someone will beat us, and they will be the heroes. That is how this industry and racing has always been. :)

Damn that Wald GT-R looks nice in white. Awesome soundtrack.. great video. That's some top notch tuning to sort of keep up with Veyron.

I wouldn't call it a David vs. Goliath, since we all know what happened at the end between David and Goliath. Give Nissan $1.7M price tag, or even a third of that, to build a car and I'm sure it will be interesting. A good match would be to put Veyron against the Ultimate Aero, which is only around a third of Veyron's price tag. Veyron really lost face when going against the Ultimate Aero...the price tag difference can make it a true David & Goliath.

@ otakki , you think price is everything ? anyone can make a 1000+hp car nowadays , but not everyone can make a car than can compete with the Veyron in every aspect.

Hmm, public roads, during the night, 250+ km/h, I wonder what will be the outcome if one of those fine cars hit an innocent bystander? One other thing, if this street race was in Dubai or KSA, will the comments be as positive. I am a car enthusiast for 25+ years now, and nothing on this earth comes close to the great feeling that I get after a nice drive. And I believe being responsible dose not contradict any of that.

I'm not denying the virtues of responsibility, but if there was an innocent bystander standing in the middle of a motorway in the middle of the night, well that would be very odd indeed.

I don't see why it would be odd Mikeado. Some innocent people may be travelling and just parked for a rest. Some innocent guy has problem with the engines or whatever and parked for help. There're lots of cases, we just tend to be ignorant. I'm not saying that I don't speed, but I pay pretty much attention to the smallest details to keep others and myself safe.

I don't care how much price difference there is and how they keep up with the Veyron -- bottom line is that VW pulled this off with comfort, elegance, style, richness, etc. GTR's and AERO's I like them, but they're not comfortable everyday rides, they can do one thing is the go fast, I bet they're a pain in a traffic jam. As for Veyron -- that car is a benchmark. Add to the fact that the others probably need maintenance after pushing them this hard, Veyron considers this a daily normal stuff... That's what you paying for, top performance without the sacrifice. PS. Cudo's for RUSSIANS to actually have fun with these, not just bring them out for a photoshoot!!!

Traffic jams are a great equalizer, you can sit almost as comfortably in a Veyron as you can do in a C-Class in a traffic jam. Also, that Veyron is not much better than the Nissan when it comes to reliability, check some of the ridiculous maintenance costs and 10k km wheel changes (yes, I said wheels, not just tires): http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/17/bugatti-veyron-running-costs-so-spendy-cheaper-to-use-a-private/3

lol the veyron isn't a daily driver, nor is it reliable. Look at the interior it's hideous and is completely barren of interior ammenities. I'd much rather drive an aero or gtr (both of which have nav screens and non gouge your eye out interior styling)

I'd easily have a GT-R - tuned or not - over some hideous plastic missile that's allergic to corners (i.e. the childishly named "Ultimate Aero"). The only choice for me is whether I go for an R35 or one of the Skyline GT-Rs. Also I'm sure it's better in a traffic jam than either the Bugatti or the SSC. The 20" wheels won't help, but the interior's designed for you to have a normal-volume conversation at 300km/h, so it's tightly put together. Plus it IS designed to be used daily. GT-R vs Veyron is an interesting comparison though, as the AWD, dual-clutch over-engineered beasts have a similar character, what with them both being highly capable but arguably lacking in good old passion and soul. I reckon one day a tuned GT-R will catch up to the Veyron, the highest of benchmarks.

Braking distance must be long for most tuned cars. Notice how quick Veyron brake and goes again. That will be hard to duplicate on tuned cars without compromise.

it is some sort of audacity that a GTR is racing with a Veyron, however the Japanese Monster has proven to be one of the main if the not the most 'Anti-Supercars' opponent..great vid though

The Veyron swiftly dealing with even hard-tuned GT-Rs. Let's see what happens on a country road. CAR Magazine pitted a factory-spec GT-R against Big 'Ron. Yes, the Nissan was wasted in a drag race, but on a winding road, the GT-R proved to be unflappabble, the big Bug being too low, too wide, probably too heavy and frankly too expensive to exploit like "Godzilla".

Nissan GT-R is heavy as well. About 300 kg less than Veyron.

@Joe_Limon Well I'm not sure about reliability, because according to the RTL report that tested Veyron early this year, never one brake down!!! Yes, it's true that all maintenance costs are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE, but all mechanical parts suffer extreme preassures and extreme strain!!! Just imagine a transmission that has to transmit all that power and all that torque. The gearbox is produced by Ricardo, a company that makes gearboxes for F1. The gearbox in an F1 car only has to last a few hours. Volkswagen wanted the Veyron?s to last 10 or 20 years. And remember, the Bugatti is more powerful than any F1 car. Ricardo spent 5 years on this project!!! Nissan gtr is one of the best cars in the world, but VEYRON IS A GOD OF ALL CARS!!!

Gentlemen, ?Theory of evolution?Japanese evolved to produce the GTR, whereas, Europe evolved to produce the Veron? It?s all about standards & quality. The Euro standard has been high for a very long time, whereas, just recently all others are catching up? Props to the GTR for giving the Veron such a run. Even if the GTR won down the road, well guess what! The Veron dude is still going back to his mansion, his 50 car garage, & his fleet of chicks?. Sure if you compare their speed but value!!! Rolex=swatch?.
