BMW Z Spyder Stradale, Z8 successor rumored for 2014

Posting to bulletin board e90post, BMW inside source Scott26 says the German automaker is developing a new "high end luxury" concept car said to be a pet project of company CEO Dr. Norbert Reithofer.  The BMW Z Spyder Stradale was first pitched five years ago before being quickly pushed into research & development.

Then the economy collapsed, and the new premium roadster was shelved.  However, with the economy slowly starting to get its grip, BMW looks poised to bring out a car that harkens back to the BMW 328 Mille Miglia.

If the posted sketch looks familiar, that's because the bottom half was already published in the August 2009 issue of Automobile Magazine as the BMW California Spyder.

The car features an elongated hood with a driver seat set just in front of the rear axle.  The shortened rear certainly ties in with the Z car lineage.  As seen in the new image, the car could potentially get scissor-doors, but this is not set in stone.  Scott26 says the doors could also open either from a rear hinge, or more conventionally.

The California Spyder was rumored to have the same V10 engine that the BMW F1 team used at the time.  That engine kicks out 700 horsepower (522 kW, 710 PS), though Scott26 says the car may get a V8 or V10 producing 592 hp (447 kW, 600 PS).  A kinetic energy recovery system and other hybrid elements could make their way onto the car.

Like the Z8, the Spyder Stradale would keep an aluminum frame, but lightweight carbon fiber panels would be produced through a partnership with SGL Carbon.  Steel and magnesium will also be used at the front, as well as the rear suspension, while a carbon fiber tub will be the basis for the passenger area.  The speculation suggests that this car could also be the backbone for a new two-seat Rolls-Royce Roadster,

Intriguing exterior features include a two-piece folding hardtop made from carbon fiber, active aerodynamics, LED daytime lighting, regenerative braking, stop/start, and BMW's first-ever automatically-extending rear spoiler with an extra lip for added downforce.  Inside, the car will have a minimalist angled dash with an iDrive screen and large vents, as well as lightweight bucket seats and a sharkskin interior.

If produced, the BMW Z Spyder Stradale might not hit the market until 2014.

would be very nice. BMW did not have an image car/ Q car for many years. M1, Z8, then nothing for the past 7 years.

I don't think Q car is the term you're looking for... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-car

I don't think the car needs that much power if its going to be made of carbon fiber, and seriously... shark skin; they're as rough as a nail file.

Of all the cars even built, the z8, in my mind is the prettiest. (followed by the aston db9 and the Ferrari 360 modena). Since the z8, BMW didn't deliver a significative item for the book of awsomely pretty cars. Mercedes now with is SLS AMG and Audi with the R8. BMW have no choice, the have to create an icon. And I think it is the perfect time since BMW is cured form his "design infection" ... i'm not going to call any name here... I love the bmw brand, but with the 7 Series of 2001, the 5 Series GT and the X6... all of them completely hidious cars by the way... I kind of... lost my faith, I Can't wait to see Z Spyder on the public road. I'm pretty sure they will produce it. The new Z4 and M3 sure look pretty and sporty. Great cars! Sorry But no product from the current bmw lineup can match with the graceful beauties of today.

What's arrogant about BMW taking their time? Making sure they build an amazing car correctly? Finding the right engine + transmission? Making sure they use the right materials to keep the weight down, but prevent the cost from skyrocketing? There's nothing arrogant about making sure you build a car to the best of your ability. Plus, the numbers speak for themselves. Lexus shouldn't even be considered in the same league as BMW. While they do build alright vehicles, they are not BMW, Audi or Mercedes.

i dont see how 7/8 years will benefit the actual car, what with the rate of technological advancement, if you designed a chassis designed in 2001 wouldnt it be obsolete now?...not to mention an engine??, 2 1/2-3 years is a reasonable gestation period for a car,, bmw makes the best engines, has the funds, the tech, and they know a thing or 2 about handling so why not?? certainly a manufacturer of bmws stature should almost always have a halo car.....just ask mr merc he'll know!!

the Z8 was an stunningly beautiful car, so glad that BMW is making a successor for it, but hopefully it will have proper handling and chassis tunning

I'm not so sure doing another droptop front-engined car is the best choice for BMW. Sure, they do those very well, but isn't it time to rather build something that harkens back to the M1 (if they're absolutely hellbent on the new car harkening back to something)? Give us a mid-engined, proper hypercar. Something to truly scare Lambo, Ferrari, even Pagani for that matter. I'd love to see a svelte, light-weight, powerful-enough dynamic tour de force car come from BMW for a change. Give us that BMW. You owe us as much.
