2011 Tokyo Motor Show gets smaller venue, new date

After a virtual boycott by several manufacturers of its 2009 event, the Tokyo Motor Show will return in 2011.  The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association has decided that the show will begin on December 2nd, instead of its usual October start date.  Media will be invited for advanced previews from November 30.

That takes the Japanese showcase away from the Frankfurt Motor Show, and nestles it in between the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show and the North American International Auto Show.  The relaunched show will take place at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center, also known as Tokyo Big Sight, a facility with 72290 m2 of exhibition space.

From 1989, the show had been held at the much larger Makuhari Messe based in Chiba.  That facility is nearly three times as large as the new location.

Aside from the typical showcase and demonstration of the latest vehicles, the show may put increased emphasis on transportation in future societies.  Other exhibitions could include talks and demos from coachbuilders, energy researchers, information and communication technology professionals and urban planners.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (Chairman: Toshiyuki Shiga) has decided to hold the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show for ten days from December 2 (Friday) to December 11 (Sunday), 2011 (open to the public from Saturday, December 3) at Tokyo Big Sight (Ariake, Koto-ku, Tokyo).

The Tokyo Motor Show was held at the Tokyo International Trade Center in Harumi, Tokyo, for about 30 years from the 6th show in 1959 through the 27th show in 1987. Over the next 20 years from the 28th show in 1989 through the 41st show in 2009, 14 shows were held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba city, welcoming a total of 17 million visitors during the time and enhancing its position as an international motor show. Now for its next leap forward, the venue will be transferred to Tokyo Big Sight to mark its new start as a “reborn” Tokyo Motor Show.

The reborn 42nd Tokyo Motor Show will be a comprehensive one that includes passenger cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, vehicle bodies, parts, machinery and tools. With the participation of major brands from Japan and abroad, this international motor show will serve as a hub to send out information about the latest next-generation safety and environment technologies from the automobile industry. At the same time, it will offer visitors the opportunity to rediscover the appeal, joy, and fun of cars and motorcycles by viewing, touching, and riding the actual latest models.

New features of the show currently under consideration include the showcasing of proposals for the ideal future society surrounding cars as well as proposals for new automobile lifestyles and culture. Specifically, there will be a Carrozzeria exhibit as well as participants from the fields of advanced ICT (information and communication technology), urban systems and environment/energy for a low-carbon society that is led globally by Japan.

The show will be open to the general public for ten days, three days shorter than the previous show in 2009. This creates a better environment for exhibitors from Japan and abroad. Like the previous show, two weekends have been included in the dates so that many visitors can attend. The call for exhibitors is slated to begin from early September this year.

-After a virtual boycott by several manufacturers -of its 2009 event you mean "almost all of the non-japanese manufacturers" ... as far as i remember the only attendants were Alpina, Caterham, and Lotus. hopefully there will be more than three foreign brands in the next event...
