Audi says brand not well-enough established to sell small cars in North America

Audi has again ruled out bringing the A1 to the U.S. market.

In March, global sales chief Peter Schwarzenbauer said in an interview with Automotive News that the A1 wouldn't be making to the U.S. because the brand wasn't well established enough to be selling small cars in a market that greatly favors larger models.

The latest confirmation came with news from Audi that orders for the A1 may go beyond the planned production of 50,000 units for the first year. Plans are for Audi to build 80,000 units in 2011 and 100,000 per year after that.

The A1 goes on sale in Europe this summer. Prices will begin at €15,800 ($19,382) for the base model with the 86 PS (63 kW) 1.2-liter TFSI engine. That engine could be considered too weak for a U.S. market offering.

US dealers were hoping to have the A1 with a price tag of around $18,000 or $19,000 but that may not be enough of a margin for Audi if sales volumes were to be too low.

As Schwarzenbauer said in the interview with Automotive News:

"...if you look at the real numbers [MINI and Smart sales in the US], it's not huge volumes. I'm not so sure yet we really see a trend to small cars in the United States."

On the other hand, if no one is selling small car in the US, nobody will buy any and the trend won't change, that's for sure !

Would have been nice to see this car hit the U.S. streets, maybe in the future.

fail. aren't they claiming the A1 to be a luxury compact in its own class? the A1 is nicer done than the A3 in all ways. this is just too bad.

Ok, this man doesnt think. Will somebody please tell this man this car will sell just because of the badge on the car? this would attract somany young buyers. not only would they have a first ever affordable luxury car, they will CLEARLY SHOW it off to their friends and say "hey look guys i got an audi!" let alone, a teen buyer. duh! think Peter Schwarzenbauer

In response to Audi?s CEO who said $40k (before tax credit) was a lot of money for the Chevy Volt that competes with the Toyota Corolla? $19k (starting price) is a lot of money for a car that competes with the Toyota Yaris!

I think it's more likely that Audi thinks the A1 is too small a car for the US market. The upcoming A2--which is essentially an A1 with four side doors--is very likely designed with the US market in mind, especially since the only version of the A3 sold in the USA is the five-door hatchback.
