New Bugatti Veyron to top 1200hp

New Bugatti Veyron to top 1200hp
Bugatti Renaissance artist rendering - 1280

Quad-turbocharged, 16-cylinder engine is capable of the additional 200 hp

A 1200 horsepower Bugatti Veyron?

Well, as the model winds down its current production run it, could be a possibility.

In a speech at the Vienna University of Technology former VW chief Ferdinand Piëch hinted at such a model for the future but did not give any further details.

Piëch is no longer at the helm, though, so his statement perhaps should be taken with a grain of salt, although he still chairs the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG. On the other hand, he is still the guy who green-lighted the Veyron in the first place. Bugatti is a VW Group brand.

How would they do it?

Well, when you're working with a 16-cylinder, quadruple-turbocharged engine, you can always find some room for improvement. Apparently, the engine is indeed capable of much more than the 1001 PS (736 kW) it produces in its current configuration. Or maybe they'll just get the added 200 hp by dropping an extra 2.0 liter TFSI power plant from the Golf GTI into the engine bay.

Note:  Bugatti Renaissance artist rendering used for entertainment purposes.

Correction: This article previously stated erroneously that Ferdinand Piëch is no longer with VW Group. He retired as Chairman of the Board of Management at Volkswagen AG in 2002 but still serves as the Chairman of the Supervisory Board. The correction has been made.

Love the design, still regonizable as a bugatti and aggressive, but unlikely this would ever be consider for the next Bugatti as they combine performance, and prestige. But still great job

looks mean, and fast. a little bit too busy though. i like the more simplistic yet bold look to the current veyron. this looks like a crazy body-kit was thrown on. it still looks stunning, just in a much different way i think.

The article incorrectly states that Piëch is not at VW any longer. Even-though he is not involved in the day to day operations at VW, he is still chairman of the supervisory board. His comments should most definately be taken with more than grain of salt. Read into the VW/Porsche takeover fiasco and you'll understand the influence and power that the man has. If he wants an extra 200hp added to his pet project he'll get it.

true. i would like to see the new Veyron with added lightness , they must have learned a lot with the development of this car, i wish they will push it further.

That is correct. Piëch still has the final say at the VW Group.

So true, it would not matter if they kept adding more power. What they really need is weight reduction and further handling modifications to try and make it somewhat track worthy.

Come on WCF. At least check your sources. This Piech slip-up is yet another easily corrected mistake that should have been caught by your tech-editor. WCF could EASILY be the #1 automotive news outlet...

lol, whoever thought the veyron's 8liter engine was anywhere near topping out it's numbers really needs to read a book on turbo charging... or compare hp/liter numbers of other fi cars.

The Bugatti's W16 engine is a great technical achievement but i still think this isn't the best way to go to achieve all that power...

Mr. Piech always must be taken very seriously I had the pleasure to meet him personally more times some years before - since that time I always buy the magazines with Piech-interviews, you can read the future from his words

Elderly beware, that is not death coming for you. Now, go change your diaper! That thing is friggen evil. I think they should even change the name to Reaper... as in the Grim Reaper. Just imagine seeing, or even hearing, this pull up from behind you in your review mirror. Awesome!

Imo, if the new future hyper-Veyron came true... it may be designed by ItalDesign, since VW is about to make a purchase of it. http://www.worldcarfans.com/110051926348/vw-to-buy-italdesign-giugiaro---report

Piech said it will produce 1001 HP... and they did it. Sounds really cool but I'm sure the engine always produced more than that... and they just limited it to the required value... when you know a 911 turbo produces more than 530HP for 500 sold... So they will pretend they have to change the exaust and engine computer to get 200 more HP but this is pure marketing I'm afraid.

The engine is rated to guarantee producing at least 1001ps. In reality the engines produce between 1020-1050ps on the dynos. I'm sure that getting 1200ps is probably not a problem from the engine (who couldn't tune a turbo engine..?), but with that comes consideration for coping with all the problems the extra output causes - cooling / brakes / transmission etc.

anyone can make a 1000hp engine nowadays , but how many can make than engine last, that's the problem. the Veyron isn't built to be a track car , it's a GT car , it can be driven on long distances any time of the year, how many other 1000+hp cars can do that ?

having a maintenance schedule to replace all the drive train components doesn't mean a car is built to last lol
