BMW 5-Series hybrid confirmed for 2011, 3-Series hybrid in development

BMW executives have given the go-ahead to a hybrid version of the BMW 5-Series.  Regular production and sales of the vehicle could begin in 2011, according to BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer.

At the automaker's 90th Annual General Meeting of stakeholders, Reithofer said, “As early as next year, the new BMW 5-Series will also be available as a full hybrid."  If successful, this car could also pave the way for more hybrids from the automaker, including the 3er, as BMW pushes to reduce 2008 fleet carbon emissions by 25 percent before 2020.

“...We are anticipating the hybridization of further models series, such as the BMW 3-Series," he said.  "We also work with modules in this field, choosing the most suitable hybrid solution for the respective model.”

The 5er hybrid would likely be based on the BMW Concept 5-Series ActiveHybrid seen at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.  The car combined a straight-six petrol twin-turbo engine producing 300 hp (224 kW) with a 54-horsepower (40-kW)  electric motor.  The concept utilized an eight-speed automatic transmission, and used up to ten percent less fuel than other 5er models.

I know the graphics shown are for the prototype and marketing but I can see a few hybrid customers actually wanting to order those graphics on their vehicle.

this story is so interesting i forgot to care. i still can't believe how ignorant the car buying public can be, thinking hybrids are a long term answer when clearly they aren't.

Well said. But the problem is that there remains to be a plausible alternative, because I don't think that electric is going to last. I really hope the next step is hydrogen, and Honda seems to be moving in that direction with the FCX Clarity.

except for the fact that i vaguely remember reading in a scientific journal that H2O is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2 (need to double check that tho) and that our ability to generate hydrogen is based upon the use of electricity and hence will not significantly reduce our dependence on fossil fuel.

Adding to sub39h's comment, it is still costly to produce hydrogen. Electrolysis requires large inputs of electricity and gathering hydrogen from methanol would mean that we would would need huge sources of methanol. It might be better just to burn the methanol. If that is the case, we should probably just switch to using bio-diesel. I think hydrogen is green-washed when it is really just an energy shell-game.

Just wanted to point out that the FCX is still electric, but the power is generated by the hydrogen fuel cell, and stored in a battery. I also think Hydrogen is very energy intensive to produce at the moment, but we can expect huge technological breakthroughs in both battery and hydrogen delivery systems in the near future. So in my opinion, it will come down to which wins in the marketing department. With that said, I think our only viable option in the distant future for personal transportation is nuclear power. That should be buttloads of fun.

I agree with Iconic: The Automotive trend nowadays is to have a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) until the Battery Technology becomes feasible enough for full Electric Vehicles (EVs). The problem with EVs are: 1. Battery is too Expensive/ Heavy 2. Limited Range/ Charge Retention 3. Lack of Charging/ Battery Swapping Stations I really do feel that Hydrogen and Solar Power are the power sources of the future. Battery Tech (Carbon Nano-tech Battery) is improving, hydrogen Production will become cheaper when our oil reserves run out. Solar Cell on Large Satellites orbiting Earth will beam Power (via coded Microwave) to the Ground. Hydrogen Cold Fusion powered Cars and ultimately...Anti Gravity Cars...I hope I'm still alive when they actually build one...

Is it just me or are those rims sick? If they made them for a Merc I'd sooooo get them.
