Police believe Uwe fell victim to a crime

Tuning firm Gemballa has closed, following the disappearance of its founder Uwe Gemballa.

While details remain scarce, Gemballa went from earning €16.2m in 2007 to €8m in 2009. While this is understandable, given the global economic recession, it appears "dubious" transactions put added strain on the company. By January 2010, fearing collapse was imminent, Uwe decided to seek out investors in Dubai and South Africa.

On February 8th, Uwe arrived in Johannesburg for a two-day business trip. On the evening of February 9th, Uwe called his son and told him he had an accident and desperately needed one million dollars. It was the last time he was heard from.

So what happened to Uwe Gemballa? No one really knows. Speculation is rampant, citing everything from a planned disappearance to a ransom plot gone awry, but police believe Uwe fell victim to a crime.

Uwe's mysterious disappearance and the subsequent closing of his company, has left a large hole in the tuning world. Gemballa was best known for producing over-the-top supercars like the €300,000+ Mirage GT Matt Edition which we affectionately called a stealth bomber with a Porsche logo (it was based on the Carrera GT).

Oh.. I thought Gemballa was one of those "established" tuners. But I guess it wasn't, afterall.

There were actually news about his disappearance on this site on Feb. 25. Few people commented on that piece so he?s not been forgotten.

A closure of a unique tuner. Whatever the circumstances may be, hope that he is safe and can return to his family asap.

I'm crying a little bit inside. This company was the bar for Porsche tuning for the longest time, i mean their cars were very tastefully done with purpose. Very sad, but i mean South African rebels are a joke, if i was his son i would of spent 10 million on some ex-special forces mercenaries to bring back my dad and the heads of all the kidnappers, and the head of the chief of police in that area for letting something like that happen under his watch..

radmeister... I like your thinking,... I lost someone 15 years ago, who was kidnapped along with his 14y son, 3 days after their arrival to the Philippines, they asked for ransom and killed them anyway? simply F@#$ up?

So sad...I just saw a Gembella Avalanche being serviced at the Porsche dealership when I went in for a test drive today... Like it or not is upto personal taste...but that car sure does make a statement. I have associates going over there for the World Cup next month...I hope there won't be any issues for them. But for the Gembella family I hope there is closure (with a happy ending) for them.

You bunch of fruitcakes!!! First of all- I have been to South Africa MANY times, as I have mining interests there, and the rebels RADMEISTER refers to, must have been sent there by him, its NOT that type of country, in fact you are far safer from things like that in an open-minded country like South Africa than in Europe OR America, perhaps if you stopped believing that ignorance is bliss, you would learn something about the world around you people!!! Or is it just a matter of growing up so you can work towards affording to see a little bit the world??? If there are any South Africans on this forum- Please confirm or deny this, as the times I have been there I have found it to be a friendly, classy open-minded nation with better public sector FREE healthcare and education than most other countries!! Sure - if you want to live lavishly you would need the money- but its no war zone, or a down and out place- Im lookin' forwards towards spending june there actually (beats Hawaii hand down as a place to live imho)

I live in South Africa....In Johannesburg the most dangerous city in the world....and yes its so so easy to die here or get kidnpapped, hi-jacked etc. Yes vilvo if you have the money to come to SA then you wont be visiting dodgy areas.....90% of SA is a death trap...take it from somebody born and bread here in SA. I dnt eaven stop at red robots after 10:00 at night or even dare to walk around outside at night without a gun. So when you come here in june stay at the coast or bush resorts which you probably stay at.

There are no rebels in South Africa, unless its right-wing militants who blow up places that are frequented by africans but I can count years since the last time that happened. There's no denying that crime levels are very high... in Johannesburg or Durban most specifically but I have to mostly agree with vilivo. One thing I learnt most recently is how the media in other countries like to report on all the worst parts of what happens in this country so most of your views on what happens here are very distorted. Honestly, I only write about this as I love my country but I'm seriously getting annoyed of this whole thing and I'm tired. You guys can think what you want to I really don't care any longer.
