The engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox which helps it accelerate from 0 - 62mph in 7.3 seconds for both the hatch and the estate. Average fuel consumption comes to 45.6 mpg-UK (6.2l / 100km).

A set of 17-inch ‘Gigaro' alloy wheels with 205/40 R17 84W tyres appears both up front and at the rear. Not bad at all. I would like to know what the non-estate version weighs. 178bhp should move this car along pretty well. Good job Skoda/VW.

Not pretty, but at least it is cheap. A 180bhp hatch for less than ?16k is a good price.

I dove the previous model with a 1.9 turbo diesel and it was v rapid and sort of fun with all that torque, all rather ruined by the typical VW nose-heaviness.

I thought the Skoda's fastest car ever was the Octavia RS 2.0TFSi...

Correct... I see they've changed the text from 'fastest Skoda' to 'fastest Fabia' (and both are bested by the Superb 3.6 v6)
