Next Mondeo will feature new grill and rear lights

Here are the latest set of spy pics of the upcoming facelifted Ford Mondeo, caught doing some road testing somewhere in Europe.

By the masking that Ford has placed on the front and rear ends of the car we can see that there will be a substantial amount of change to the Mondeo's styling, including a new grill. Our spy photographer notes we can get a better look now at the new rear lights too. The inside lamp housings mounted on the luggage lid are still covered but we can start to make out the differences to the current model. Also a possibility are integrated LED lights for the rear.

The facelifted Ford Mondeo may also come available with the brand's 2.0 liter EcoBoost gasoline/petrol engine with 203 PS (149 kW) now featured in the Galaxy model. A line of diesels will also be on offer, with Ford's 2.0 liter TDCi engine tuned to either 115, 140 or 163 PS (85, 103, 120 kW, respectively).

The new Ford Mondeo is expected to debut later this year, perhaps at the Paris auto show in September.

Excellent comment Hero Sina, Meethinks its due to providing employment for their American staff, who design and engineer things like the US Focus. If they brought the Euro Mondeo over to the USA what would they do? The last time Ford DID bring over the Mondeo (mark 1) it was called the Contour and it was absolutely horrible! Some bright spark gave it a face-drop, the interior was made out of shitty plastic? and this was pretty much repeated with the Focus (mark 1) when they brought that over too! I would be most happy if Ford did bring it over; it?ll slaughter most of the competition? Ford?s loss!

@Hero Sina, The current Mondeo was developed before the One Ford program. Right now its too late to modify the current Mondeo and bring it over to the US because it will soon be replaced by a new generation model in about 2-3 years. It has been reported that the next gen Mondeo will also be a global model like the 2012 Focus, so expect it to be sold in the US. I guess the big question is what name will it use, Mondeo or Fusion?

I'm pretty sure the answer is simple: different cars that appeal to different markets. The US Ford range (from what I've seen) is very different to the European one - even when they very recently sent you the EU Fiesta, that got a mild restyle and, I'm guessing here, re-calibrated suspension to suit American roads. Maybe even different engines. But like AG4 said, the next one will be a "world car" to save money, although I would think it would be called the Mondeo, as in Europe, Ford Fusion is a Fiesta-based family car that totally bombed.

@Mikeado, What I meant was what name will it use in North America. Mondeo or Fusion (current name of the mid-size USDM Ford sedan)? Unlike the 2012 Focus, the current Fiesta was restyled for the North American market (longer bumpers) because it wasn't originally designed to meet US regulations. The global 2012 Focus was designed to meet US regulations, its expected to look the same in all markets. The next Mondeo will most likely be a global car too like the Focus.

I know that's what you meant. I meant that, assuming the name stays the same across the globe - what with it being a World Car - Mondeo would be the better choice of those two.

If you look good at the picture you see that a part of the lights are masked. Therefore I believe that this is not a new design, but this is the long expected Mondeo ST/RS.

Ahem, "The facelifted Ford Mondeo may also come available with the brand's 2.0 liter EcoBoost gasoline/petrol engine with 203 PS" is a slight understatement. It's already available, all the magazines have reviewed the ecoboost Mondeo and the specs are on Ford's website. http://www.ford.de/Pkw-Modelle/FordMondeo/Fahrdynamik

In general the update will consist of new bumper styling and daylight integration (since this has to be on every new car from 2012 on). Also new engines will be introduced in the updated Mondeo as well as the chance of a BMW M3 competitive model. Hybrid is still not confirmed.

I don't think Ford has any plans to make a Mondeo based 400+ hp BMW M3 competitor. I'm guessing the top of the line next generation Mondeo will probably use a 275hp 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine.
