 BMW M3 GT2 triumphs at Nurburgring 24hrs - RESULTS
BMW M3 GT2 wins 2010 Nurburgring 24hrs

Winning car was hobbled by gearbox problems near the end of the race

BMW Motorsport's own team has won the 2010 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in Germany.

The winning BMW M3 GT2 wore the number 25 and was driven by Jörg Müller (Germany), Augusto Farfus (Brazil), Uwe Alzen (Germany) and Pedro Lamy (Portugal) who completed 154 laps on the 25.4 km circuit. This was the fifth Nordschleife victory for Lamy who is now tied for the all-time record with Marcel Tiemann of Germany.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen said in a press release: "That was a fantastic return for us at the 24-hour race here on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife...I have never known excitement like I experienced today."

It was a tense run-up to the victory for the team as the car experienced transmission problems near the end of the race and was losing one gear after another. Theissen credited the efforts of drivers Müller and Alzen in bringing the hobbled car in for a win.

"During my last stint we lost fourth gear. The problem gradually got worse. The main priority was to be careful and keep the car in the race. Everything worked out superbly in the end," said Müller after the race.

It was a strong showing for the Bavarian brand over all, with 63 of the 198 cars running in the race being BMWs. BMW Motorsport's second BMW M3 GT2, number 26, finished seventh while Schubert Motorsport and Dörr Motorsport finished fourth and ninth, respectively, each running a BMW Z4 GT3.

BMW Motorsport last won 24-hour race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 2005.

credit to them but after 13 of 15 favos out it can also be called: huge slice of luck.

They won because the fought the hardest. They had bad luck also, the radiator had to be replaced, which the team replaced incredibly fast. They also had a flat tire, and lost 4th gear in the final hours. The number 25 car that won set competitive lap times the whole race, often trading fastest lap with the GT3rs hybrid that led for most of the race. BMW Motorsport had reliability and speed, along with a great team effort. They won on there own merritt. The other teams didn't bring enough to the table and failed.

glad you agree. That is pretty embarrassing for Audi though. They had 7 cars near the top of the grid and only 2 finished...they were quick in qualifying but lacked the race pace..lol, but whatever...its in the record books now.

Instead of coming up with an intelligent retort, all you have to say is "yeah whatever lol". You know that what he said was true. Do you people really find it that hard to congratulate BMW on any racing accomplishment? They may not have the quickest 0-60 times, but it's an overall great car. If you say BMW's win was luck, then you'll have to say every winner in any racing competition is due to luck.

too bad the hybrid didnt make it! i adore that car although im not a fan of that whole eco racing thing @catchmyshadow: i'd say: credit, where credit's due they might not have been the fastest but they were the most consistent of the "top" cars. they wouldve finished almost top5 i guess if less cars wouldve been out

Porsche Hybrid failed with a transmission failure (with just 2 hours left and running in 1st place), ABT Audi R8 LMS got some huge failure when it's in 2nd place BMW's win is more luck than credit

the point of this race is to OUTLAST not necessarily outpace everyone, and BMW just happened to be the best at this. Credit is due!

where others have failed BMW succeeded. How does that lower the credit they deserve? Congrats BMW.

My favorite team, Team Manthey, crashed and placed 168th overall. The stock 911 GT3 RS got 13th and the GT3 R Hybrid got 9th! Very good results.

Too bad that the Hybrid Porsche failed just 110 minutes before the end of the race. Gratz to BMW and a special gratz to the Farnbacher Ferrari team which was the only high ranked non works team and even finished 2nd place. Guess no one expected it to endure this race and get a final position on the podium.

8th photo with the winner car and a broken stand in the background with Audi logo is rather symbolical. In any case I appreciate achievement of this BMW GT2 and the Porsche hybrid for particular technical innovations although it looks to me that the No. 1 Porsche would have won it for the fifth straight time if not the accident.

I guess Porsche could've had more chances of winning if they have kept their cars simpler and not "upgrade" them with KERS. all in all i'm quite surprised about some of the standings

And Audi was lucky that Manthey's pole-position Porsche failed, so what ?! Stop complaining about lucky or not. BMW won and they deserve it. It's more about reliability than speed. And that's also the part where VAG roadcars aren't that good as most people think.
