Stewards penalty drops Schumacher out of points

The Monaco stewards, including driver representative Damon Hill, have imposed a penalty that drops Michael Schumacher out of the points placings.

The seven time world champion passed Ferrari's Fernando Alonso at the last corner of Sunday's race, after the safety car that had been deployed for the Jarno Trulli/Karun Chandhok crash pulled into the pits.

There is a new rule in 2010 that allows overtaking between the safety car line and the finish line.

Where the confusion arises is that if a race finishes under the safety car, there is no overtaking allowed even though the safety car itself pulls into the pits.

Ferrari and Mercedes disagreed fundamentally in the stewards' room, and ultimately the officials declared that Schumacher had breached article 40.13 of the sporting regulations.

The rule states that if the race ends under the safety car, "the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking".

In lieu of a drive-through penalty, 20 seconds has been added to Schumacher's time, meaning he drops from sixth place to twelfth.

But Mercedes' Ross Brawn believes that because the cars raced at full speed to the chequered flag rather than in slow formation behind Webber, all the teams acknowledged that the safety car period had ended.

"I think you saw the reaction of all the other drivers," said the Briton.

"If what Stefano (Domenicali) has said was true, they would just cruise to the start/finish line because they knew they couldn't be overtaken, but everyone went for it and I'm afraid Fernando was a little asleep and we took advantage."

Actually, that was some of superb moves done by Michael & scary accidents between Karun & Jarno, but I didn't know that was a new rule & since Monaco pitlane is so long this year with 24 cars & 12 teams that they had to extend there pitlane & its quiet unfortunate for Michael.

I thought the move Schumacher made on Alonso was superb, if the race was supposed to finish under the safety car the safety car should have stayed out and crossed the line with the drivers. Every driver in the race thought it was a race to the finish line, Alonso was sideways with rear wheels spinning. FIA Ferrari International Assistance.

Agreed 100% with landy95. The Safety Car did not finish the last lap, and that means that the rest of maybe 5% time of this lap was LAST LAP RACING TIME. Sad to see that they did this to MS and that Safety Car closing a race isn't a clear procedure even after so many years passed off it's introduction. Mercedes should sue FIA!

This is utter bollocks. Damon Hill and the Ferrari International Assistants would always have teamed up against Schumacher, even though he didn't break the rules, unless they were changed or rephrased between the race and the Steward's meeting. It's like David Coulthard said: "If they can't race between the Safety Car line and the finish line, then it's pointless. The Safety Car might as well lead them across the line."

"Track clear" means track clear. If it?s a SC finish although the SC comes in for the "clean" TV images (how stupid), then at least yellow flags and SC signs should be shown. The combination of green flags and the "track clear" clearly means: race! The best manouver of the entire race gets a penalty. Poor.

"if the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pitlane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking"
