New model will compete against the upcoming Audi A2 and the Mercedes A-Class

BMW is set to launch a new batch of FWD (front-wheel drive) hatchbacks in the next few years. Of those, one will be an entry-level BMW-badged vehicle, positioned beneath the 1-Series, scheduled to debut in 2013.

The new model is expected to compete against the likes of the Audi A2 and the Mercedes A-Class. It will have a body-style similar to those models - a high roof 5-door, 5-seat hatchback with a transversely mounted engine and gearbox to provide for a shorter bonnet and more cabin space. BMW will also offer a sportier variant, a different model altogether, to rival the A1. Autocar reports that BMW will also be offering the 1-Series as a front-wheel drive while still retaining the rear-wheel drive variant.

The Bavarian automaker will be launching the next generation MINI in 2014 which will share its front-wheel drive architecture with those new BMW models. We have previously reported on BMW's plans to make up to 1 million front-wheel drive vehicles - badged as both MINIs and BMWs - by 2015.

BMW is not worried about its entry-level model cannibalizing its MINI sales.

"Both brands possess a clear and individual image. Our research shows BMW and Mini appeal to different buyers," said a BMW source in the Autocar story. BMW points to the success of VW and Audi in sharing platforms but distinguishing the brands as an example.

ha. ha. ha. looks like BMW has sold out on the only core value it had left... (personally all jokes aside i think it should leave the work of a premium small car to the MINI brand and get on with making cars 1-Series sized and above.)

Only palpable advantage they have against A, B -class and Audi was just that RWD. Why they do it!?

1-series also having FWD?!...What's that all about?! Who would want that?!...Oh yes, those large percentage (per their research) 1-series owners who have no freaking idea if their cars are FWD or RWD. But don't worry, all these FWD will sell like crazy because all people need to see is the badge and they will buy it. As for me, no FWD for me. No way!!!

as if the 1 series have not cheapen the brand already. yes, it got them some entry level buyers. Could you, BMW, make us a Q car, an image car, a poster car? there has been really none since the Z8. (may be the M3 CSL or etc). but really, if someone wants a Front Engined hatch from you, they buy a MINI.

Why does it have to carry the BMW badge? I'm not a marketing expert, but you don't have to be a genius to know that this kind of models will ruin the brand image! "The ultimate driving machine" will never, ever be a FWD. wake up BMW!

Don't you guys read the news? http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/19/business/19emissions.html Is all because of new emissions standards. Why do you think all of the sudden all the performance brands cave in and start proposing hybrids and smaller motors.

This is why even Audi has been hinting that they may just bring the A1 to the US market--they have to sell enough A1's to offset sales of Audi's larger models in terms of CAFE rating for the brand in the US market. But really, Audi will more likely bring the upcoming next-generation A2, which is essentially a five-door hatchback version of the A1. And it may include a US-legal turbodiesel version, too.

BMW's idea to bring up the FWD platform is based on clientele who don't feel the difference between being pushed or pulled by their cars. What an attitude!

I cannot wait for the FWD BMWs ... I wonder if BMW realized, why on earth didn't they approach FWD years ago. Many love BMWs in Canada, Rear Wheel Drive isn't the best choice for ice and snow although the traction control on the BMWs since 99 has been nothing less than amazing ... I congratulate BMWs courage ... I also wish they'd make a very low gas consuming, perhaps hybrid/electric, non-150+hp car ... I LOVE BMWs yet I don't need an engine that's going to take me to the past, to the future or to space ... I just want to enjoy the "driving" experience ... that's it ... without the excessive speed, just a little bit of acceleration from 0 km/miles to 100km/60mph ... that's it .. The integra does that very well on a 1 point something litre, 4cyl.
