Ferrari Cutting Jobs, Production as Demands falls

Ferrari Cutting Jobs, Production as Demands falls
Ferrari 458 Italia - 08.02.2010

Ferrari is to idle factory production and cut jobs in a bid to match a downturn caused by fewer engine orders from its sister company Maserati. Maserati received about 4,500 engines from Ferrari in 2009, a far cry from the 9,000 delivered in 2008.

It is reported that factory workers staged a four-hour walk-out because Ferrari plans on eliminating 120 office positions and 150 factory jobs in exchange for the last payment of a 2009 bonus which was due this past April. A total of around 3,000 people are on the company payroll.

"Ferrari has proposed to pay the bonuses if we accept the job cuts," Giordano Fiorani, a union official representing workers said. "We are ready to discuss layoffs and reorganization, as there is a real cut in production, but we don't understand their rigidity."

Fiorani told Bloomberg that Ferrari plans to lay off about 600 workers for a week, beginning next Monday. Ferrari spokesperson Stefano Lai confirmed that plans were afoot to lower the headcount but did not mention any figures.

In addition, Fiorani claimed that 2010 production targets were being slashed from 20,000 to 11,000 units, a claim refuted by Lai. Ferrari had never planned on producing 20,000 cars this year and will maintain production at about 6,000 vehicles, similar to last year's output, Lai said. Moreover, some jobs would be outsourced and some employees would be offered early retirement.

Ferrari sold 6,294 cars in 2009 while its first-quarter trading profit slid 28% to €39 million (US$49.5 million).

6000 cars per year! That's a lot of cars. Definitely lots of wealthy people out there. I'm surprised this segment is being affected by the economy.

Just goes to show, even the Supercar manufacturers can suffer in a recession. I wonder how many executives will loose their jobs?

or design and build SUVs...with passion . Lamborghini had the LM002 , why can't they follow suit ? Maranello has to learn how to get off from its high horse (pun intended) if it intends to stay in the game .

That picture reminds me of a dream I recently had. Only in my dream, I was pictured behind the steering wheel with a very big smile on my face.

Does anyone here read the article actually or just keep yapping nonsense after reading the title only? It says Ferrari is not cutting production of it's cars at all, only the production of engines contracted by Maserati (independent from Ferrari). The cars are still selling very well, thank you....

absent , if Ferrari is doing good business , then why the proposed layoffs ? No wonder it is shifting its strategy towards roller coaster rides , ahem !

Layoffs apply to engine production only. Losing 50% of orders for new engines must hurt and leave a lot of excess capacity so some people have to go ,even when the production of Ferrari cars is not affected.

Got to remember Bill Ford/Mulllllay saw this coming around a year before it actually hit the motor industry, Ford raised capital by selling 20% of Mazda back to Mazda, Ford also borrowed or Hocked the Company Name for Dollars. Ford are NOT out of the woods yet, remember the banks would not let Ford leverage anymore money from or off their assets as they are already up to their necks in equity loans which need servicing.

Dear Absent: I think Ferrari is also planning to cut down their cutting down their vehicle production and not only their engine production. I blame it on their recent Design Language, I mean just look at 458 Italia, 612 Spaghetti... Oops I meant Scaglietti and the other one Ferrari 599 GTB/GTO for instance. Ugly swept back Headlights on all of them...not a smart Idea. You don't have to do it just because some of the other manufacturers are doing it. They all look kind of pacified and boring to me. I personally love the 360 Modena and all the other previous Ferraris. I think they should change their Design Language if they want to be one the most sexiest cars again as they used to be once. But of course this is just my personal opinion.

Dude, the 458 Italia has a waiting list of over two years. Its not that they aren't selling them, indeed Ferrari are selling the same number of cars as they usually do (~6000 a year). Read the friggin' article, its a drop in demand for engines by Maserati. Thats it, Fiorani is just doing what all union reps do, whinge and bleat whilst biting the hand that feeds them.

seriously, only 4500 maserati's for 2009? i thought they claimed they were doing well in selling maseratis in wall street journal despite the recession. that is just too bad for both companies.

Ferrari is not a volume car maker so these numbers are fine. The price reflects not only the quality of the technology but also the hand-made, low production exclusivity. I can't help but play devil's advocate and mention that perhaps Ferrari will provide engines for the Dodge Viper after all...that would take care of those 4500 missing engine orders...
