Audi 8-speed to replace 6-speed automatic across most of range

Audi will widely use an eight-speed automatic transmission produced by ZF, instead of a six-speed unit on cars sold in the United States, according to AutoWeek.  The periodical cites the new 2011 dealer order guide when it says that roughly 70 percent of vehicles sold in the U.S. will feature the transmission.

Amongst these are the 2.0-liter turbocharged versions of the Audi A4 four-door and Avant, A5 coupe and cabrio, and the Q5.  All versions of the Q7, along with the A8 and A8L will also be sold with the ZF eight-speed.

Meanwhile, all A6 and S6 units, as well as the front-wheel-drive A4 and A5, the S5 coupe, and the 3.2-liter Q5 will be available with either the six-speed automatic or the CVT.  Cars sold with the dual-clutch automated manual gearbox will not be changed under the new plan.  Likewise, the R8 V8 and V10 will be sold with either the six-speed manual or the R-Tronic gearbox.

The 2011 model year versions of these cars should hit the market this fall.  Audi could make an official announcement later this summer.

There must be some high gear ratios then. Go past 10mph and the auto-box will put you in 2nd Gear. :P

not really. These new gearboxes featuring 7 or more ratios is really an attempt to offer better performance, and fuel efficiency. Think of it as traditional way of achieving the advantages of a CVT, but without the annoying 'rubber band effect' or constant engine wine under hard acceleration

Silly thing is these are not replacing the CVT (multitronic) boxes. I think Audi are going for the record of 'most confusing combination of transmissions available on one model'.

So the order guide shows a 2.0T & 3.2 Q5? Interesting. Although I had hoped they would replace the 3.2 with the 3.0T(supercharged) - especially after seeing the new X3 on this site with its 300hp turbo engine. It makes me long for more from the Audi.

Frankly, Tiptronic was getting old. I wonder why they didn't just use the 7-speed S-Tronic

The DSG is about $1500 more expensive than the 8-speed slushbox. You can get it in the S4 and the S5 (ragtop). BMW has the DSG in the 335is, now available.

but they're still using it on some engines. the 2.0T and 3.0TDI quattros come with S-tronic, so why not the rest of the range?

Oddly, European-spec 2.0 quattros use the 7-speed DSG. Q5s too.
