BMW Official confirms 5-Series Diesel for U.S.
BMW will sell a diesel-engined version of the BMW 5 Series in the United States, according to a report in Inside Line. Quoting an unidentified source, the blog notes that the automaker has yet to reveal several important details.
The company has not said which diesel engine will be on offer in the States. The range is sold with three diesel choices, starting with the base 2.0-liter inline-four that produces 184 hp (137 kW, 187 PS) and up to 280 ft-lb of torque. Two inline-six 3.0-liter models are sold, with one producing 204 hp (152 kW, 207 PS) and up to 332 ft-lb, while the other kicks out 245 hp (183 kW, 248 PS) and up to 398 ft-lb.
A release date for the US-spec 5er Diesel was not disclosed.

no a diesel wagon. As most of the jetta wagons sold are diesels, i think that is the way to go for seliing wagons in the usa

reckon it will be the mid range engine. the more powerful one would be too expensive and i don't think people spending that much would consider it, and the I4 version will be at a disadvantage in the US because it's an I4 even tho there's nothing wrong with them.

It should be the same 4.4L V8 Diesel from the 745D, i think that would be the best choice for the American Market, 330hp 553lbft. MMM MMM GOOD!

The 745d has been replaced by the 740d, which is just a higher-powered 3.0 twin turbo with 306hp/442 lbft. It actually outaccelerates the V8 diesel S-Class by a quite big margin while being a lot more fuel efficient as well.
I'm absolutely sure that engine will end up in the 5-series at some point. It's already in the European-spec X5.

i think it's a safe assumption they'll bring the largest one over. I say bravo. Nice move. I confess that my inner dieselgeek would prefer a wagon, but this is cool as is.
