These first photos of the next generation 2012 Volkswagen Passat sedan prototype were caught by spies hiding out in the mountains of Europe.  The field photographer noted that the new car looks to be much wider than the current model, and at the same time looks to have a longer wheelbase.

This can be seen, in part, at the side windows where the front occupants appears to have much lengthier windows than before.  The greater dimensions will translate to a roomier cabin, giving more legroom and space between passengers.  Despite the possible larger size, do not expect much in the line of a weight increase.  Reports have surfaced that the automaker will build the Passat with foam reinforcement and ultra-thin glass to save weight.

Significant padding at the front and back makes us cautiously optimistic that the automaker is building a more dynamic look into the new Passat, hopefully letting us forget about the dull look of the current B6 version.  Look for petrol and diesel models to max out from 280-300 hp (209-224 kW), with a BlueMotion-badged hybrid model also in the works.

Features on the car could include airless tires, though that is not the case with this prototype.  Other equipment suspected to be present on the production model includes 4Motion AWD, all-angle parking cameras, and a wiperless windscreen system.

Check out the pics and let us know what you think of this car.  Will it be a hit?

Of course! It's not a big surprise. This is based on the current B6 model. It will be just as new as the Golf Mk6.

Just transplant the lights and grille from the Touareg and call it an official pic. You'll probably be right... Wiperless windscreens and airless tyres sound quite interesting though...

We see these spy pics every day but dont really think about it. Does anyone really think there was someone waiting up in the mountains (southern Germany) far away from VW headquarters (northern germany) with a camera waiting to take pictures of a mule? Most "spy" pics are staged. Who waits for a vw test car in the Germans alps with a camera handy

They don't specifically wait for VWs or whatever, they just know common test routes and try to happen upon new prototypes during testing.

Actually the plates do state BS which is Braunschweig so it could be the Harz mountains as there is a VW station in braunlage I believe. Still though...

i too think it is a restyle, the front ad back look pretty much the same as the restyled phaeton and that car kept the same interior pretty much, just like this passat. the car looks longer because it no longer as the inward kink at the back. jesus they need someone new at vw, the products are getting so boring and predictable.

The spy location is Grossglockner, Austria. The car is basically a heavily facelifted version of the B6 Passat although it will be marketed as an all-new model.

It will look exactly the same, unless you got a trained eye, which most people don't
