Ferrari Formula Rossa roller coaster details revealed, 0-100 kmh in 2.0 seconds [video]

Top speed of 240 km/h

Stefano Domenicali, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa have helped unveil the Formula Rossa roller coaster at the Catalunya Circuit during the Formula One Spanish grand prix.

Designed to simulate the F1 driving experience, the Formula Rossa is the world's fastest roller coaster with a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). Able to carry 16 passengers (on four cars), the roller coaster accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 2.0 seconds and climbs to a maximum height of 52 meters (171 feet). The 2.07 km (1.29 miles) long course also features a series of "sharp turns and sudden drops" which generate 1.7 Gs.

According to Claus Frimand, General Manager of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the roller coaster's goal is "to bring the sensation (to people) of what a Formula One driver is experiencing. The incredible speed you'll be taken to, you'll be flying through the landscape. Starting in an air conditioned environment, shot outside the building, running around and coming back inside the building again."

As you may recall, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi will open on October 28, 2010. It features more than 20 attractions including the GT roller coaster, the G-force experience (which takes "passengers on an adrenaline-pumping ride up over 62 m, through the roof and back down again"), and the Flume ride (which explores "the heart of a Ferrari 599 engine").

An exceptional debut for Formula Rossa

Montmelo, 6 May - "Formula Rossa" made its public debut this afternoon at the Catalunya Circuit. A vehicle used on one of the fastest roller coaster rides in the world was presented to the media with three special passengers, in the shape of Stefano Domenicali, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa.

The attraction is part of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the first theme park whose actual theme is the Maranello-based company. It will be officially opened on 28 October at the Yas Marina Island, in the Abu Dhabi emirate.

"I can't wait to have a go on it," commented Fernando Alonso. "It's true that we drivers are used to speed, but this way I'll get the chance to share the thrill of doing 240 an hour with my engineers, so they can get a feel for what it's all about!"

"It might be a bit too soon for Felipinho to have a go: when we will be in Abu Dhabi for the Grand Prix, he will still not even be a year old," added Felipe. "But I will definitely have a go myself, maybe with Raffaela alongside me!"

Formula Rossa Overview

How Fast is Too Fast?

Strap yourself into the F1 cockpit and hold on, as you blast away on the fastest roller coaster on the planet. You'll accelerate to 240km/h and see what 1.7 Gs really feels like. You'll scream over the track and 52 meters into the sky before flying through the chicanes and across the finish line on the Formula Rossa.

Formula Rossa celebrates speed, aerodynamics and technical innovation.

A featured attraction at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the world's first Ferrari theme park and largest attraction of its kind, Formula Rossa will take you on the most thrilling ride of your life.

The Formula Rossa journey will begin in a temperature controlled pre-ride waiting area, where riders will be given protective eyewear, designed to protect passengers from the windforce generated by the coaster's high speed. Using a hydraulic winch system, similar to those used to launch jet planes, the F1 inspired coaster is then shot out of the launch area using 20,800 horsepower and propelled to a height of 52m in less than 5 seconds.

Riders are then taken on a blindingly fast and thrilling experience along a 2.07 km track full of sharp turns and sudden drops.

According to the designers of Formula Rossa, Jack Rouse Associates, the key challenge in building the world's fastest roller coaster was obtaining the desired speed without compromising passenger safety and comfort.

If you want to check out other fast roller coasters, check out this site: http://www.rcdb.com/rhr.htm (RollerCoasterDataBase). My favourite: Dodonpa in Japan; it goes from 0-170kph in 1.8 sec (that's 0-100kph in about 1sec, or 0-100mph in about 1.7sec). This is not F1 level, this is Dragster level.

Shame that I can't have a ride in anything that shakes, rolls, turns or drops fast since my childhood days. My stomach is simply unable to resist to those fast movements. Even long journeys in cars as a passenger can be turned to nightmares sometimes, and the interesting thing that it's OK when I drive myself.

get real Mr. Claus Frimand... first of all F1 formula cars don't ride on rails , secondly they navigate a FLAT racetrack never climbing to 52 meters then suddenly falling down to earth .thirdly , F1 machines are single-place automobiles quite unlike your pretentious amusement park contraption . please go and find someone you can jerk around with with your silly promotional hoopla .

wtf. Calm down. It's a roller coaster. It allows people to experience speed and high G loading that they wouldnt normally experience. Nobody in their right mind would consider a ride on this comparable to actually riding in an F1 car. It's just marketing, and it's harmless. Theme parks give people excitement, fantasy, fun, and escape. Drop the pretentiousness and let people enjoy themselves, 149mph and 1.7G is more than enough for most of the population to enjoy.

It's the same basic engine, but I would imagine to get it front-mountable and GT-like (in terms of engine curve), they made a few changes.
