First Aston Martin Rapides bound for customers
First Aston Martin Rapide off the production line 07.05.2010

Will delivered in the coming weeks.

Aston Martin has announced the first batch of Rapides have left the Manga Steyr factory in Graz, Austria and will be delivered to customers in the coming weeks.

Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Rapide is Aston Martin's first four-door coupe since the Lagonda went out of production in 1989. It features sexy styling, bi-xenon headlights (with integrated LED sidelights and direction indicators), and clear LED taillights.

Inside, the cabin boasts leather upholstery, walnut trim, and iridium silver accents. Other goodies include a rear center console, automatic climate control, individual seating for four, and organic electroluminescent (OEL) instrument displays. Thanks to the hatchback design, the Rapide has a 750 liter cargo capacity (301 liters with the rear seats up).

Power is provided by a 6.0-liter V12 engine with 470 bhp (477 PS / 350 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to a six-speed Touchtronic 2 transmission which allows the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds) and hit an estimated top speed of 188 mph (303 km/h).

Currently on sale, pricing starts at £139,950 in the UK and $199,950 in the United States.

New Four-Door Sports Car Officially Joins British Marque's Product Line-Up

Gaydon, Warwickshire, 7 May 2010. A new chapter in Aston Martin's modern era has officially begun; with the first four-door Rapide sports cars leaving the Aston Martin Rapide Plant (AMRP) for delivery to eagerly awaiting customers.

Following a warm reception from customers and media observers alike, the Rapide is now set to reach customers and Aston Martin's 125 showrooms in 34 countries over the coming weeks.

First shown in 2006 in concept form at the Detroit Auto Show, the Rapide project received an immediate green light from Aston Martin's new shareholders in mid-2007 following the sale of the marque by the Ford Motor Company. In a little over two years, Aston Martin's dedicated design and engineering teams have delivered a new car from the ground up.

In parallel with making the Rapide a reality, Aston Martin and its specialist automotive partner, Magna Steyr created a state of the art facility to ensure the Aston Martin Rapide achieves the same exacting standards set by the marque's model line-up at Aston Martin's headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire. The result is a plant that combines the very latest technology with time-honoured craftsmanship.

From the preparation of Rapide's bonded aluminium body frame, to the painstaking six-stage painting process where nine coats of paint are applied making Aston Martin's paint finish the best in class, to the trim shop where highly-skilled craftspeople shape and stitch 10 of the finest leather hides to create the Rapide's magnificently upholstered interior, the AMRP is a centre of automotive excellence.

Unveiled in production form at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009 to worldwide acclaim, the Aston Martin Rapide encapsulates the values of Aston Martin in a four-door sports car with unrivalled performance, extremely high levels of craftsmanship and exceptionally elegant design. The Rapide is a car to savour and share, an expressive sports grand tourer that extends the Aston Martin experience to an entire family, a group of colleagues or other performance enthusiasts. Beauty, power and practicality have never been presented so seductively.

The elegant Rapide, functional yet luxurious, provides space for up to four adults combined with an engaging driving experience synonymous with all Aston Martins. A 301 litre luggage compartment affords generous space for belongings for all four passengers, creating an Aston Martin which can be enjoyed on any occasion, anytime, anywhere. At the heart of the Rapide lies an evocative engine providing effortless power and torque: a hand-built 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 470 bhp (477 PS / 350 kW) with peak power being delivered at 6000 rpm and 600 Nm (443 lb.ft) peak torque at 5000 rpm. A specifically tuned six-speed Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission features as standard, allowing the driver to change gear automatically or manually via the steering column-mounted magnesium paddles.

The Rapide is on sale now via Aston Martin's global dealership network.

I'm sorry, but the raised hatchback roofline at the back kills the whole car for me. If only the estoque had made it into the real world

Mercedes made the first and only true 'four-door coupe'. Everything else seems to be a sad imitation hatchback; Panamera, Rapide, A7, A5 Sportback, 16C. I honestly think it kills the looks of the cars.

Admittedly, I agree that few cars have done a good job since the CLS. But I think the Rapide is a pretty good try, and the A5 Sportback is the second best out there... if they were available in the US, I would have got one. The VW (Passat) CC is just an overall good-looking car (full-frontal view aside). I fear Audi botched the A7 from what I've seen of spy shots. And the BMW 6-series 6 door coupe, while looking nothing like a coupe, is a very smart looking car.

agreed, but i have a feeling that even Merc have cocked up their CLS follow up so maybe they just got lucky. i fail to understand why you wouldn't buy a DB9 and something like a 5 Series to go with it for the same cash.

I forgot the CC; that too is a 'four-door coupe' well done. I just don't think a hatchback belongs on an ultra-luxury design showcase because it adversely affects the design of the roofline and the rear end (Panamera being the obvious example here) and you just do not see hatchbacks on expensive cars. I would not hesitate to get a DB9+pocket change over this.

At least in the US, the DB9 starts around $185K and the Rapide $199K. So if you ONLY have $200K to spend for a car... Admittedly, though, if you want an Aston Martin, one should probably get a 2-door. Also, I think the Maserati Quattroporte does a nice job of being a true, fast sports sedan.

without pissing off CLS owners, the MB's design is poorly executed. the window line is pulled up to give people an illusion of a narrow window, like a kid with oversized pants up to high. everything else (light clusters, lines) are stretched to give that illusion. having said that, the Rapide prototype has much better proportion that the production car.

That only took about 10 years! The front end of the production model could've really benefited from the lateral intakes seen on the concept. The front end looks a bit generic without. Perhaps I'll like it in reality..like the Panamera.

those workers down there must be brimming with sheer pride upon this scheduled rollout of the first batch of Aston Martin Rapides.i am all for it and am right there with them . apart from the excellent bodywork , the Rapide's interior exudes genuine luxury with its judicious choice of interior finishes . combining design elements that fulfill both practical and elegant functions . no plagiarized Vertu mobile phone features here .

I didn't like the panamera until I drove my brothers.... Damn... It is one fast boat and is overall impressive. +1 for Porsche.... On the other hand I sold my beautiful looking DB9 due to reliability issues... Maybe I am not expecting much from this 4 door!!!
