Apple iPad gets solid dash mount [Video]

Tuning outfit Scosche has developed a new dashboard mounting system for owners of the Apple iPad.  Called the iKit, the first version was developed as part of a series of upgrades for the Subaru Impreza STI.

The iKit is installed at the top of the dash replacing the double DIN stereo unit.  The iPad then connects to a platform that locks into a ball joint that sticks out of the dashboard installation.

It includes an audio and USB jack that connects to the iPad's 30-pin port to charge the iPad while sending the audio through the in-car system.  Perhaps a second-generation version of the kit would allow the audio to be transmitted digitally to the stereo, instead of through the analogue 3.5mm cable jack.

Still, it is a start, and one of what will likely be many iPad car mounts to be produced by aftermarket suppliers.

whatever happened to the time-honored driving principle KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE ROAD AT ALL TIMES ? should a major mishap occur due to this inadvertently thought of gimmickry...the guilty driver/Scosche ought to be criminally charged with DUIOFIPAD ...driving under the influence of iPad

I felt like I was watching a Porno watching that video, a "pov" one lol. Ps I would never take out my radio out of my car for anything... They better find another approach

Yeah it sounds crazy that you should remove your radio completely to get this to work. I wouldn't do it. I hear some aftermarket car radio/cd-players support streaming music from the ipad via the usb connection. That sounds a lot more reasonable than this.

Nah, too big and too unsafe to be mounted in view of the driver, that screen is going to light up the inside of the car at night and it will also reflect light into the eyes of the driver especially if a truck is following. Fail.

not sure if its illegal to drive with that thing, especially california law. Also, if you happen to be in an accident, i'm pretty sure the lawyers will find a way to your doorstep. Tuning outfit Scosche will just have u sign a waiver if they were to install the iKit in your car just so you can't sue them in case of accident. So, use at your own risk!!! As for me, I'll just stick with my crappy OEM audio thanks....

and i thought detachable faceplate is obsolete and troublesome. now, reinvented with the ipad, if you don't want it stolen you have to lug it everywhere.

Imagine having that on at night.. you go to change a song and it lights up the inside of your car like it's christmas.. Just use an iphone or an ipod and get a small adapter to either plug into your current stereo or glovebox. So much better.. In my beamer i've got one set up on a dock next to my gear leaver. Never touch it unless i want to change playlists.. using the steering wheel controls makes it easier and safer... plus it's illegal now in australia to take your hands off the steering wheel to change a song via ipod/iphone/ipad.

that's stupid... I don't see how u can stay focused on the road when u have a so called tv in the car... ok, it can be rotated, yea right... and what's the point of that iPad anyway, just another way to suck your bucks... it's not a notebook, it's not a tv, it's a photo frame, ha, ha, good one... and if I wanna watch tv, or pictures, or play games, there are other cheaper ways to do it...

I think they should mount it over the airbag on the passenger side so in case of an accident it completely removes the head of whoever is sitting there.
