Volkswagen Polo R version due in 2012
Volkswagen Polo GTI "W?rthersee 09"

Polo R set to come with a 1.6 liter turbocharged engine with around 210 bhp (156 kW)

Well, now that VW has an R division its not likely they're going to leave it to just the Golf R and Scirocco R models.

According to Autocar, VW will be producing an R version of the Polo for 2012. It will be powered by a 1.6 liter turbocharged petrol/gasoline engine producing around 210 bhp (156 kW). Unlike the Golf R, though, it will not be an all-wheel drive since the Polo's current PQ25 platform does not allow for it.

At the Geneva auto show this past March, VW introduced the upcoming Polo GTI (pictured here) which features a twincharged 1.4 liter TSI engine with 180 PS (132 kW) and 249 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque coupled to VW Group's 7-speed DSG transmission.

The Polo GTI is slated to go on sale this summer in Europe with prices starting at around £18,000/€20,000.

depends on what you want out of the car though. the Clio is a very nice machine but it can only do the boy racer thing. granted this will be a little slower but it'll also be more refined and better built. it's largely academic tho. for me i'd get either the Abarth 500, the MiTo GTA if Alfa ever get their finger out or the high performance version of the Citroen DS3, whatever that might be...

@Sub39h Boy racer, I disagree. I think the Opel OPC is rather boyish and garish in its styling the CLIO ( original not the restyled) is subdued and quite timeless in its generous width and proportion. Talking about boy racer, all the boys drive either the OPC corsa or the supped up POLOS or Honda Type R the old model... In fact the purpose behind the CLIO RS is a slighly mature audience. I know this as I am an Industrial Designer myself. But I do see where you are coming from, but one thing is key if u look at price the R polo will shoot past the lot I hate to admit it and in 2012 launch date heh, my dear friend by then the CLIO RS IV will be out and its tickets...considering the Megane RS to be such a cracker of a car cant wait what Renault has in store for us clio wise...

i do see what you're saying. i've never driven a Clio but from what i read it's only really happy doing 9/10ths driving. i'd imagine that if you want a run on the motorway or just to drive around town the fact that this will have a turbo and hence more torque will mean it's a more relaxed driver. agree with you about the Corsa and Asta OPC/VXRs being boy racers, but you see a fair few of them in Clios around my parts too. but i don't wanna take anything away from Renault. my understanding is that they do make the very best drivers cars

Understood....I think the reason why so many boy racers are into such cars are primarily affordability which in fact is not a bad thing... If you made the Polo R same price believe you me, you would see a migration of those boy racers indeed....as if the price would be the main reason in this instance. To me I dont want to be biased but I hate to admit it Renault Dieppe factory KNOWS how to create a cracker and affordability is a great thing I want a good car, and guess what I dont have to pay for the FAKE status to get it.... In this world of pure profit and capitalistic mindset and various perceptions of car marque, at least there is Renault to save the day.... :)

210bhp in a compact Hot hatch. Now that is a good idea! Something to rival the Mini Cooper JCW and Clio 200 Cup. Better not make it too expensive otherwise people will go for the Golf GTI or Scirocco 2.0 TSI instead.

I seriously doubt the R will have the same level of handling as even the Cooper Sport (nevermind the JCW) and the Clio 200. VW tend to compromise a lot and will probably make it less extreme in all regards, similar to the GTI vs an OPC, for example.

brrrr... WRONG! The PQ25 Platform is build for all-wheel drive. Thats confirmd by SEAT they said that the Ibiza would NOT get all-whell drive, but the platfrom is ready for it.
