They already have x1,x3,x5,x6 which i think is too much , x3-5-6 is already enough, don't get the point of the x1?? they should call it x3-2 ,now they want to add another x4?? whats next x2,x7,x8,x9?

The X3 better look good for the X4 to be a sucess. Bah, the target audience won't care about the way it looks anyway. They will buy the car because of the badge.
April 30, 2010 9:10 am
Dammit why did this car have to be successful?! It's given BMW the impression that it was a good idea for crying out loud!
See what you did, indecisive people with more money than sense? They're (probably) unleashing more pointless niche-hell on us...
April 30, 2010 9:21 am
BMW are pushing its brand value to launch ridiculous cars and people will buy it because it's a BMW
April 30, 2010 9:21 am
Oh be it will ganno look like the X6! C'mon the bigger X6 allready has a small leg room in the back then what about the X4 ?!

Is it me or are Merc and Audi the more focused of the 3 premium german marques? BMW has what appears to have a carpet-bombing approach to their product offering and method of sustaining sales. Frankly, the brand is making me weary with a new niche model every other week. Does that mean there will be an x2? Give me an honest to goodness, core value bmw any day over this. And where's the german engineering ingenuity in a 2/3 size x6? Not a problem, stick a badge on it and idiots and wannabees will buy it.

that's why it's called a niche product... it's not for everyone.
April 30, 2010 12:21 pm
It seems to me like they are getting so big that adding a niche product does not cause a dent in their wallets.
I do wish they would focus more on their serious products instead.

It is a problem for BMW that can't do too much platform sharing as Audi does to reduce the cost and maximize profit. Because not many BMW models can share platform a nd body shell with Rolls Royce except the 7 series, then maybe the next 1 series or 0-series or i-series with the whole mini models and Pug hatch. Soon Merc will also catch up from the B-Class expansion into hatch, saloon and coupe. Beside people who want another niche model are actually really exist. Don't you know that Toyota success because it can expand one platform into a bunch other models.

+1 scratchy. I agree with almost every comment scratchy makes on this site.

the last person who should be complaining about 'carpet bombing' is the consumer. basic business says it's cheapest to produce one product that satisfies all. however, human nature gives us all likes and dislikes (c'mon, everyone outside korea sees cars like the stavic and ayron/actyon as hideous). bmw have a HUGE offering of cars, turn up at a dealer and select between models with tiny variations and you get what you want.
the main thing is that all bmws (ignore mini) are badges as BMW... VW have success in offering a much wider range of offerings through badging techniques... cant afford an audi a4? buy a gofl, cant afford that? buy a skoda dont like the look of a golf? buy a scirrocco... same base vehicle, just to different tastes. the fact is, BMW are doing what we, the consumers, SHOULD be applauding.

I agree with CReeds. @astroturf777 It's not about badging techniques. It's about yet another bmw model where the consumer is already served by the model line-up (x6,x3,etc.). It's also not about price-point as you suggested as you can easily find another bmw for the price of this new x4. Because other car companies do it doesn't make it right and you can't compare the business plan of a huge parent company like VW with so many brands under it's umbrella to a relatively small player like BMW.

@ astroturf777 , finally someone who gets how the market works.
@ Uptohere , niche cars are for people who don't like the X3 and X5, and would buy something else instead from another manufacturer. why lose customers when you can make extra money with offering them something they want ?
the success of the X6 should be evident, the market has spoken. not all people want the same products. heck , i even see a lot of 5 GT on the roads. BMW seems to be good at mainstream cars and niche cars. the winners are the consumers, like you and me.

in my opinion there will never be a BMW better than the e46 3-series there cars are becoming uterly pointless but they still make the best engines
April 30, 2010 7:03 pm
The X6 is a sexy car and has a good stance on the road, they are nice to sit, wouldnt the X4 cut some of the margain from the X6 and they would have to careful on where its sold considering that some religions or parts of the world dont like 4. Isnt that why the 3 series has never become the 4 series as it has been called by the media a few times
April 30, 2010 7:35 pm
the X6 is a useless car. it is an elephant which doesn`t provide real space. sports cars on one hand and proper avants (like the RS6) on the other are laughing at it.
May 1, 2010 9:24 am
You are lost son and it is clear you have never been in an X6.I have a Hamann X6-M with 650Bhp and an Rs6 can't see my dust to 180Km/h.I have reached 305 Km/h clock speed with a very poor drag coefficient due to the wide aerodynamic package. The X6 has massive space inside and a huge boot.It goes through corners that only a true sports car can slightly surpass. It drives like a luxury saloon and I fully understand why those manufacturers who don't have great cars with great designs such as the X6 feel utterly jealous. It has "no"competition.Come on BMW,build the X2 and X4 for the younger people. The X1 and new X3 due are slightly conservative.BMW owners are bemused at confused VW drivers who have no clue that's what their Audi actually is.The Passat RS6 will feel well inferior in BMW's presence since the world's fastest saloon title belongs to the G-Power M5 that runs 367,4Km/h.And needless to say an Alpina B5s duly humiliates it on the performance front as well as an M5 with the BMW Performance pack.

Americans hate when the X5 and X6 is in their rearview mirror. The angel eye lights just eat them alive inside. Can't wait for the X4 to do the same to people (like lemon). They HATE that the X6 is doing so well even though they think it is ugly. That eats them alive inside as well.

oh come on! you know BMWs are like Harry Potter books; there will be a line around the corner for down payments before its tires hit the ground. BMW markets itself very well and has a lot of brand equity to fall back on. As a result the brand has the ability to define what aesthetics are to its audience. The Bangle era pretty much proved that on the occasions when they do make an ugly vehicle it only makes them seem more avant-garde. Creating another SUV with near sports car performance and less storage capacity for its footprint will continue to do the same. You do have to appreciate that for the person whom this vehicle does not suit, it will be difficult for them to understand why an owner wouldn't resort to a different product that superficially at the very least would appear to suit their needs better. Automobile purchases are more often than not about the intangibles though.

ok.... this is sad it really is im a big fan of BMW but the X6 its a pointless SAV seriously what the point of the X6 anyways? it dosent have 4 wheel drive its small and it dosent perfom well.. i say axe it and make a diferent SAV concept coupe if that is what BMW is shooting for...
May 1, 2010 7:49 pm
I hope they use the same design team as the X5 and X6 and not that horrendous 5 Series GT or 5 Series period. Strange with BMW either they are really beautiful or they are really ugly. I still cant get over the uglinessof the 5 and 5 GT. It looks like it come pre-crashed! LOL

@som3aa - You state: They already have x1,x3,x5,x6 which i think is too much , x3-5-6 is already enough, don't get the point of the x1?? they should call it x3-2 ,now they want to add another x4?? whats next x2,x7,x8,x9?
What about Audi? They have A1,A2,A3,A4,A5,A6,A8. They're talking about an A7,A9,Q3 & Q9 I hear also. BTW, your can find all of the above Audi variations among VW's lineup for less USD/EURO.
