It seems to me that Hyundai has eaten Mazda's lunch. The 'Fluidic Sculpture' design motif seems closely aligned with the concepts behind the Mazda 'Nagare' look, but Hyundai is bringing it to market faster and in a more integrated and cohesive manner. The two Mazdas that have gotten the 'Nagare' touch thus far have been the Mazda 3, with a grin that channels 'Hello Kitty' and the new Mazda 5, which looks a little too 'My Pretty Pony'. Somehow Mazda's execution of fluidic design seems directed primarily at pre-pubescent girls.

I've never been a fan of this brand but it seems that Hyundai is for some time now on a good path... and the success of the new Elantra is almost certain, even in Europe, IMO... and that engine (1.6GDI) for 140hp, while for the same power, for example, Opel has a 1.8 engine and the 1.6 without the turbine has only 115hp... so, good work Hyundai!

well it looks good. well it also looks familiar. I wonder why... imagine it with a Honda badge (think Civic)... a Mazda badge( think Mazda 3)...amazingly they all fit quite well, isn't it?! But, once again, it does look good. My only concern is that 1.6 l 140 bhp engine... they said is up to 10 % more efficient than the other's but frankly I don't buy it. You can't get 140 bhp from a 1.6 l without burning some fuel... like a lot of it.

no offense charlemagne, but its called GDI (gasoline direct injection). You should at least know if you are in this forum. Overall, GDI engines are far more efficient, thus delivering more power while consuming less fuel. Its closest competitor would be the Civic and Corolla, which, DOES NOT have direct injection. The current Civic has 140hp from the 1.8L mill, so extracting 138hp from a 1.6L with GDI is do-able.

its a vast improvement style wise over the previous generation elantra. i am starting to see a commonality of certain styling elements amongst all hyundai models though.

Family look perhaps???
I think the Hyundai designers must be proud that people can see Hyundai's as being Byundai's now...

Nice. It has a genesis coupe kind of look. 2011 sonata now this, they're on a roll.

Guys relax, Hyundai always gives the Koreans a 1.6 in Elantra, and 1.4 in Accent, a 2.0 in Sonata, etc.... US Spec Elantra will get a 2.0 GDI with 170 HP+.

Hyundai is looking to lead in America. That's why this 1.6 GDi Elantra Engine will actually be the Accent engine for the US market. Sweet, American Accents with 6 speed trannies.

"We're confident that it will once again redefine the compact segment worldwide." - When was the last time you actually did that?
April 29, 2010 5:11 pm
Umm America and Europe are still like the only 2 dumb ass places left on the planet where they still havent gotten the value of Hyundai yet.
April 29, 2010 6:36 pm
If they sold in Eurpoe and America like the way they do everywhere else Hyundai would definately be Number #2 on the globe in terms of sales, not #4 like they are now.
April 29, 2010 6:37 pm
Australia for example sells 2K Elantras a month. That's the equivalent of Hyundai selling 30,000 Elantras here a month. They sell 7500 Elantras here a months. Thats the difference. There is a world outside of America you know.

I have this feeling that the US-model Elantra will offer two engines: 1.8-liter GDI I-4 rated at 155 bhp and 2.0-liter GDI I-4 rated at 170 bhp for a more "sporting" model. 155 bhp plus six-speed automatic probably equals EPA 2008 ratings of 28 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, very good considering how stringent the EPA 2008 test is.

"Completely redesigned, the Elantra looks impressive."
Is that their description or Michael Gauthier's?

alamak, my apologies... I've read a lil' bit on GDI subject and you are right. I was concerned by the fuel consumption and it also seems that GDI is up to 10 % more efficient than I don't know, something else.

So...this is what all the people that can't drive will be driving in Seoul from now on...
If anyone on this forum will be visiting Seoul anytime soon...AVOID white Elantras on the road!
They are usually driven by (mostly women-don't want to be chauvinistic...but that's the way it is) that have no idea what they are doing and are only staring straight ahead!
Avoid at all costs!
