New Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 to receive over 500hp

New Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 to receive over 500hp
2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 Sketch

If Chrylser authorizes the production of a new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, in line with the recently-released fourth generation Grand Cherokee, the SUV could get up to 525 horsepower (391 kW / 532 PS).  The SUV would be meant to compete on the same performance level as the 555-hp (414 kW / 563 PS) BMW X5 M.

The Jeep would reportedly get at 6.4-liter Hemi engine, sans supercharger or turbocharger.  The only way it could top the 0-60mph X5 M sprint time would be to have a significantly lighter weight than the more powerful BMW.  The X5 M has a 5,082 lbs (2,305 kg) curb weight.

The current SRT8 model uses a naturally-aspirated 6.1-liter Hemi that produces 420 hp (313 kW).  It was introduced to the public one year after the third generation Grand cherokee was shown off for the first time.  Features include Brembo brakes, performance shocks, and upgraded exhaust.

Theoretically, a new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 could be introduced to the public this year or next.

They say it will be on the same performance level as the X5M, and yet I've seen the current SRT8 Jeep do 0-60 in as low as 4.1.

Are you sure? Because a saloon with 400 to 500 HP even does not sprint 0 to 60Mph in 4.1 s. Although the 4WD may help, but does not seem that much. What you might have seen was 60Kmh and not 62Mph/100Kmh

Yeah, if the 0-60 time is the same or better than a BMW X5 M then surely we can say the car performs the same or better! 0-60 time is the performance indicator. Jeep is as good as a BMW if they can meet the 0-60 time!

The current SRT-8 is a beast, one of the few American cars I actually like. At less than half the price of the X5M and the likes, but just as fast or faster than most other super-SUVs-really looking forward to this one.

A friend of mine has one. He told me 4.3 and I couldn't believe it myself. He took me for a ride and he got it tested. I saw the 4.1 with my own eyes, and I have a picture to prove it. @Turbo91: At half the price of the X5M, it sure as hell has a lot going for it. That is undeniable. And if you've driven one, you won't be so quick to dismiss it.

I am sorry but Chrysler needs to focus more on being a successful company while on financial life support instead of coming up with small market high performance SUV's

These small market items sell, and for those that don't buy the SRT8 in particular, Chrysler still gets good rep and publicity for it.

@WCF - 1. It will most likely be FTAT making the decisions on this one. 2. The BMW X5 M has 408KW/547hp/555PS. It does not have 563PS. @6spdaudi - I'm sure they know what they are doing - what are you a car exec?

...as if Jeeps don't roll over enough, add 500hp, just what people need.

I remember when Jeeps were capable off-road vehicles. Now they are just turning into yuppy crap.

Pfft. Doesn't everything have 500 horsepower or more these days? The Cayenne III Turbo has 500bhp, and the old Cayenne Turbo S had 550, 50 more than the basic Turbo. 550-570bhp for the Turbo S III, maybe...

0-60 times are so false. so what if chrysler makes a faster..."faster"....suv than bmw? i dont even believe bmw's time for the x5. i think this is pretty useless to an suv. and let us not oversee chrysler's would be engine in this new grand cherokee. 6.4 and supercharged? and not even as much hp as the x5m? please...that is pathetic. think of the taxes, think of the trees and the butterflies (lol)... that's really low. how powerful is it without the supercharger, 400hp?

Another useless post from someone who knows squat but has endless opinions. The 6.1 Litre Jeep Cherokee SRT8 is not supercharged or turboed. And the article states the new engine would be "sans supercharger or turbocharger" meaning without a supercharger or turbocharger. The 6.4 Litre is estimated to be 525hp I've seen figures suggesting 550hp could be even more! and yes that is without a supercharger or turbo. How pathetic was your post?! BTW the claim to fame would be that the new Jeep SRT8 would be the fastest production SUV. If you understand marketing you would see how significant that could be.

Marketing to people with more money than sense, but marketing nonetheless. Last time Jeep did a Cherokee SRT8, mere minutes after it was unveiled at whichever show itwas, it was beaten by 5mph by the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. After that most people forgot about the Jeep. So it's worth them giving it another shot and keep the limelight for... well, until the Cayenne Turbo S III. Germans are all about one-upmanship after all.

I like the SRT8, even with a heavy weight and a 420 hp engine only still it can do 0-60 in 4.9 secs and a top speed of 275 km which it's equal to a top speed of the lighter C300 SRT8! I'm really amazed from this engine

The current Jeep Cherokee SRT8 was touted the fatsest SUV on 0-100km/h sprint ...and I would like to attest that I've seen a lot of M3/RS4/C63/M5/E63 but my goodness I've never seen anything that fast from scratch ...that thing literally effed off!!!!!!

Meh, it's a decent car. I think though that FIAT will cancel this, i don't think the sales figures are there to justify this or any SRT vehicles. Especially when the current 6.1L gets 550whp with a supercharger, financially i cant see the point of investing in a new engine...As for what performance SUV i would buy, the Range Rover Supercharged V8 is still king, best luxury, very decent performance, and will destroy any of the other performance SUVs on the trails.
