Underground Racing Twin Turbo Gallardo Superleggera goes 250.1 MPH at The Texas Mile [Video]
The Superduperleggera
Underground Racing has exceeded 250 mph (402 km/h) in a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera outfitted with their 1500 WHP twin-turbo package.
The extraordinary event occurred at The Texas Mile, where Richard Holt piloted his Gallardo Superleggera to a top speed of 250.1 mph (403 km/h). Not too shabby, considering the stock Superleggera has a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h).
Despite the eventual success, there were a number of setbacks. For the first two days, Underground Racing played with the suspension settings and turbochargers to no avail. When Sunday rolled around, the company finally got everything right.

250mph? I guess we all have to compare it to the Bugatti Veyron then. How boring... *sigh*
I noticed the LP-560 front bumper. I guess the re-design Lambo did wasn't just for show then. No mention of power though? Surely that's one of the main reasons for this "street weight" car going so fast?

Its got 1500 WHP. The article has been updated with a link to a previous story.

mikeado, don't forget she did it on a mile from stand still.
top gear used a running start and 5 miles to reach the veyron top speed...

Wow, that's a lot of power!
ithyandel, I actually meant that the term "250mph" instantly sparks a heated debate where the same points are made over and over. And, sure enough, "It did it in a mile from stand still. TopGear used a running start and 5 miles to V-Max the Veyron". Instant comparison. With a car that came out in 2005.

whoever compares this to a veyron or even the SSC is an ignorant idiot :P did anyone notice this car can't BRAKE for shit? also, did anyone else see the fear in his eyes reaching those kinda speeds? its just not the same as the veyron so ppl, calm yourself hahhaha
April 26, 2010 10:25 am
Fear? Were you calm, cool, and collected the first time you drove a car that put 1500hp to the back wheels? And was your very first outing in that car at 250mph? Maybe he was scared but he still kept the gas pedal planted. And I'm sure that when he took his car to a company called Underground Racing for modifications that the very last thing that he asked for from his Gallardo was the same serene and drama free driving experience at 200+ mph that the Veyron provides.

ron dennis was kinda right about the bugatti... in fact im also questioning.. how can a 8.0l w16 quadturbo engine make just... 987 bhp... i mean these guys took a 5.0 V10 added just -2- turbos and managed to get i heard was 1500hp.. kudos to these guys.. stop blaming them for being entreprenurial and launching themselves at goals. and yes i think the veyron should be at least as good as a pagani zonda cinque. nuff said

To answer your question: I can´t see any long-term testing for this 1500hp Gallardo. I can´t see any desert testing or cold weather testing for this car. What about the service interval? What about comfort, engine noise? On the other hand the 403km/h are not really that impressive. The Veyron is running 407 km/h with 1001hp and about 600kg more weight. It´s not ab problem to get out 1500hp. BMW has done this with a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder engine in the 80´s...

That is really amazing. For a basicially stock car, besides the engine, to accomplish this is unbelievable. For a car traveling more than a football field a second and which calculates almost 5 football fields to stop at that speed, I am amazed at the brakes

A [modified] Ford GT just went 266mph in the mile, but you didn't hear that from me.

ok, so I amazed at what the company can do with the Baby Lambo, and my hat off to them to pushing that much horse power out of the V10. but seriously though 1500hp, it's that a bit of an overkill and who really needs that much power on the street. 560hp is more than enough.
April 26, 2010 4:14 pm
Oh and what tires were used for this test. I pretty sure the tires that were made for the Lambo are not the same ones that are on this car. the tires wouldn't be able to withstand the heat.
April 26, 2010 4:52 pm
Yeah the heat, but mainly the combination of heat which increases the air pressure in them and the weight of the car from the downforce, it probably gains another 2000lbs of weight at that speed over stock.

LOL this vs veyron are two completely different things. It's like comparing a Kart vs. F1 car, you can strap a 1000cc into a Go-Kart and have better figures than an F1 car, but in a race around the track the F1 would win. The difference is that one car was designed to go 202mph and the other 260. I mean it's not hard to make any car with a decent CD and a properly geared transmission go fast. Take the engine out of a prius and all the electric drive components, drop in a Supra I6 engine, titanium sleeve the cylinders, titanium internals, and you can pump out around 2000hp for 1-2 runs in the texas mile. And i bet that if you got a Veyron and pay uncle Edo a visit he can tune that baby to go 280mph, it has huge tuning potential out of that engine. But what is the point?
April 27, 2010 2:18 pm
the point is the if we're gonna spend bugatti money(how many times a month does a veyron owner even dare to take it out of the garage), having a car with this kind of performance(straight line) would make a bit of sense...
