New small hatch signals MG's intention to move into volume segments

MG has unveiled the MG ZERO concept car at the Beijing International Auto show.

The MG ZERO is a U.K.-designed concept car from the British brand's director of design Anthony Williams. The model is a compact, measuring 4 m in length, and is intended to push MG to expand into the high-volume segments of small-to-medium sized hatches.

Distinguishing the car is the high-tech interior and an inventive use of red-color lighting to create a special ambiance inside the cabin.

MG is now owned by Chinese automaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). ChinaCarTimes reports that the model may one day make it to market there as the Roewe 150 or the MG2. The Roewe brand is a SAIC marque derived from the Rover assets it inherited when it purchased the former MG Rover. The Rover brand is now owned by TATA.

MG reveals UK-designed ZERO concept car

The MG ZERO concept car has been unveiled to the world's media today as one of the stars of the Beijing Automotive Show, now one of the world's most important automotive events.

The MG ZERO Concept car has been developed by MG Global Design team, led by British MG Design Director Anthony (Tony) Williams-Kenny, based in Birmingham.

At around 4m in length, the MG ZERO concept previews the design direction of the brand and demonstrates how MG can expand into this high- volume sector of the market. MG ZERO reflects the latest trends in the market for vehicle size, styling and technology and is designed to show how MG will offer products that will appeal to a wide audience across the global market.

MG Zero also demonstrates the design and engineering capabilities of SAIC by showcasing a number of innovative features. The bold interior has clean and simple lines with high contrast flashes of accent colour. It uses the latest technology touch screens to allow occupants to interact with the world around them and features a striking ‘floating console' design around the driver.

The high-tech materials are draw inspiration from ultra high-performance sports equipment and there is highly innovative use of interior lighting features to create real emotion in the cabin. The bold red-coloured illumination adds a touch of drama.

Commenting on the exterior style, Design Director Tony Williams said " This concept shows a bold, individual soul. The bonnet is formed around the famous octagonal badge, the graphics flow into striking lamps and the large lower grille completes the confident, sporty character. The body-side has a strong shoulder, a dynamic scalloped feature in the doors and flared arches to give a wide stance and strong road presence. The feature lines have been designed to give a strong relationship to the wheel arch demonstrating the fun nature of the cars dynamics."

MG ZERO also explores the integration of the latest communications technology in the vehicle and in addition to the interior systems, it features a fun communications system on the exterior of the rear!

Guy Jones, MG Motor UK Sales and Marketing Director summarised by saying "MG Zero is crucial to the development of the brand globally, as it gives clear direction for the future beyond the current products. We are all proud to see our British-designed vehicle wearing the MG badge creating such an impact in Beijing. With the MG TF back in production in Birmingham, sales increasing and the MG6 coming at the end of the year, the MG ZERO has come at the perfect time to build further awareness and interest in the brand here in the UK."

its not too bad, really like the interior. anyone else noticed that news items seem to be taking forever to appear on worldcarfans these days? it used to be the first site for news stories and now its falling well behind conventional magazines sites? eg, the new bmw 8 series has been on every other site for at least 3-5 hrs???

i generally think it's journalism has slowly been going down the pan lately - constant spelling and tech spec mistakes, bad writing style etc. i'm slowly drifting elsewhere.

I never thought the people who write here are on a salary (no offense to the writers, not implying their work is bad).

Whoever decided to put "We're A Happy Family!" on the back must be fired immediately. Or move to Nintendo. Otherwise, I think the front is a little fussy (although that may be because of the busy headlights more than anything else), the interior is a '90s vision of "The Car of 2020", although the centre console is nice, and the rear is somewhat anonymous. I don't like the side of the car. What else strikes me is that - with that raised 'V' shape in the bonnet, the triangular item under the door mirrors, and the stick-out side crease below the windows - there's a lot of Alfa Romeo in there. Not that that's a bad place to draw inspiration or anything...

Design inspiration must've been: 1. Storm Trooper from Star Wars 2. Citroen 3. Kia (detail of the headlights)

Strong derivative lines from new VW Polo GTI aside, this is a half-decent supermini Concept from MG. If 80 percent of interior can remain unchanged, then MG could be in business provided it bears MG2 moniker on its bootlid rather than Roewe! Engine choice, chassis dynamics and pricing strategy are critically important factors for its success (especially in the UK market)!! However, the SAIC association and overall design direction makes MG's future look Most Ghastly indeed.
