Toyota FT-86 pricing going higher than expected
Toyota FT-86 G Sports Concept - 1600 - 22.01.2010

Toyota fans, if there are any left, will be disappointed to know that the Toyota FT-86 will cost €2,000 more than expected.  The car, a joint development project between Toyota and Subaru and loving called Toyobaru, could come with a base price of €17,000, according to Autocar.

The higher cost has been attributed to excess research and development outlays, which hopefully means the accelerator will not get stuck, the brakes will work, and the car will not rollover in tight turns.  This is still much lower than the Subaru-badged version, which is expected to come out in Japan next year at about ¥3 million (€24,037).

Toyota is moving in a bit of a different direction with the car, according to the magazine.  The model will target new car buyers in their 30s and 40s, instead of 20-year old first time buyers as first reported.  This could potentially translate into a duller, more boring model meant for mass appeal, as opposed to a quirky, customizable entry-level sportier car as originally intended.

19.000 pound is still very cheap and 19.000 euro even cheaper. You can't really find a decent fwd hatchback for that money, let alone a rwd coupe.

I doubt if they can get the 30s and 40s market. It looks like a toy. i'm in my 30s and for me it looks good but I wont buy it.

You get Scion tC for that price here and I'll def go for this one over tC. Good styling for a Toyota.

Then what engine will be implemented to the entry level? 1.5 l petrol or 1.8l petrol. If it is the 1.5 l petrol, then it will be really a bit expensive, but if the entry level will be 1.8 l or even bigger capacity engine, it is a bargain. However, please do the interior correctly as recently it's even more dull inside than outside (just take a thought about what will be Subaru's contribution in the interior parts & designs). By the way, most manufacturers have offered turbo petrol for small engine (1.0l to 1.6l), will this Toyota debut Toyota's own turbo petrol engine?

I hope that white car is not the final version. The front of the red car looks so much better!

Targeting the car at an older demographic might actually have a positive effect on the car's performance. Since when has Porsche or Ferrari solicited business from the 22 year old?

that's bcuz generally speaking, most 22 yr old cannot afford to buy neither Porsche nor Ferrari. You are way off base comparing this with the elites....IMHO

You need to work on your reading comprehension....IMHO. I wasn't comparing an FT-86 to a Ferrari or a Porsche, I was comparing the marketing strategies of 3 companies that just so happen to produce automobiles.

i thought i answered it the first time......"that's bcuz generally speaking, most 22 yr old cannot afford to buy neither Porsche nor Ferrari".......IMHO. Yes they just so happen to produce automobiles, but like I said, you are comapring very different business strategies from toyota to Ferrari/Porsche. Like you are saying why Bently do not target the same customers that buys Honda Accord....am I making sense?

Now that I think about it, Ferrari and Porsche really do market their vehicles to 22 year olds. Correction, make that 12 year olds. It's just unfortunate that those poor kids can't afford the car until they're 60, if ever.

I've read another article, and the estimated US price is $26,000. This $6,000 price increase wasn't due to trying to improve performance safety or quality, it was trying to get extra fuel economy out of a sports car. Imo it's far too much for a 160hp or even a 200hp car. That price range has it lined up with 300+ hp monsters.

Indeed. The Genesis Coupe and V6 Mustang and Camaro already look like better buys. Toyota is dulling down its attempt to be sporty.

Joe .. i couldn't agree with you more ! In Europe this situation doesn't stand up, but over there in US where you can get both the Mustang or the Camaro with this pricetag for the V6 engine and some optionals, it will be hard for Toyota to make serious competition. Though .. i don't think it will be sold at this price, i guess it will be under 20 000 USD for the base spec model. At the end .. they should launch it, because i'm already bored with this model from Toyota&Subaru never launched since the official announce.

Seriously, this car should be based on the Corolla AE86 from the 1980s. If it isn't, and is "targeted to the 30-40s" , it really doesn't make sense. Stop making this thing then.

If they will mantain the RWD technical solution, then 17 000 EUR for the base model is not much !! It looks very good and you almost don't take it as a Toyota .. lately their designers are very very weak, i don't have a model in the Toyota lineup that i find appealing! (except Lexus LFA) This one should raise a little their image, if they'll launch it in my lifetime. (i'm 25)
