Subaru UK announces complimentary Prodrive Performance Pack on WRX and STI

UK customers are being given an added incentive to buy a new Subaru Impreza WRX or Subaru Impreza STI Type UK. The Japanese automaker is giving away the Prodrive Performance Pack and an upgraded set of wheels for new buyers.

The complimentary equipment would normally cost an additional £3,200. Those wanting to purchase the regular WRX will find that price reduced by nearly £100.

Tuners from English firm Prodrive hit the car with a remapped engine control unit, and add on a high-flow exhaust system and 18-inch alloy wheels. The result is a WRX that completes a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds, 0.6 seconds faster than before. STI owners will see their sprint time improve by 0.4 seconds to 5.2s.

Subaru UK made no mention of the actual horsepower gains made by the Prodrive Performance Pack.

From April Subaru's highly acclaimed Impreza WRX and STI Type UKwill be offered with complimentary optional upgrades worth over £3,200 at participating dealers. The free items include the Prodrive Performance Pack, which further improves acceleration *, and stylish new 18-inch alloy wheels and tyres.

The Performance Packs, developed in conjunction with Banbury-based tuning experts, Prodrive, adds a reconfigured ECU and high-flow sports exhaust to the Impreza's already impressive performance arsenal. The 18-inch alloy wheels, meanwhile, give the car a more aggressive, purposeful stance and improve handling and grip.

As if the prospect of this extra equipment wasn't tantalising enough, the Japanese firm has reduced the retail price of the All-Wheel Drive WRX by £95.

Subaru UK Marketing Director, Kenyon Neads, said: "With this offer we've added even more value into the Impreza equation. The WRX and STI are performance-car icons with a seriously loyal following and we hope that the prospect of these free upgrades will broaden their appeal still further."

* 0-62mph acceleration figures:
- Impreza WRX (standard car): 6.5 seconds
- Impreza WRX (with Prodrive Performance Pack): 5.9 seconds
- Impreza STI Type UK (standard car): 5.2 seconds
- Impreza STI Type UK (with Prodrive Performance Pack): 4.8 seconds

As far as im aware the horsepower gains for the STI is upped to 332bhp from 300bhp. And im pretty sure the 0-60mph was 4.7 seconds...not sure how that droped to 5.2 seconds for the 0-62mph...unless gearchange involved at that point?!... or maybe im just wrong with all of this?!lol!

So if this is just an upgrade to make a STI pretty much the same as the 330S, what is the point of selling the 330S?

Well it's not always about the horsepower, a modified exhaust system and a lighter weight provides better agility to the car and improved overall performance.
