The long wheelbase car has become a definite status symbol in China, and it appears a new car will try to rise above the competition in that market.  These pictures of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class with a long wheelbase were snapped outside the 2010 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

Seen unguarded, the car could be Daimler's attempt to compete against the Audi A6L and the Volvo S80L.  Audi also produces a stretched versions of the A4 for China as well as the A8L for global markets.  Not to be outdone, BMW has also recently released it's own 2011 5-Series LWB for the massive Asian market.

According to ChinaCarTimes, the long E-Class is 7mm shorter in height, but 14-centimeters longer than the base domestic model.  The vehicle would come out of the Mercedes joint venture with Beijing Auto, and would likely be dubbed the Beijing Benz E300L.

Mercedes has always made a long E-Class, usually with a fixed central portion.

I think it looks 2much like an S now. And also its the cheep E also. No "in built exhaust" and a higher front bumper. IDK about the euro spec, but the US has 2 E350 specs.

because even the cheapest S class in china, which is the S300, has got a starting price of about 150-170k USD. and this is china where most people simply doesnt have that much money. So a cheaper E class or A6 would make sense.

Mercedes-Benz has a long tradition of LWB sedans... and this V212 is one heck of a beautiful one! As a global company you have to adapt your products to each and every individual market, like LWB sedans in China, big engines in the US, crazy-powerful models in the Middle East, compact and savvy cars in Europe, etc. GO-GO Mercedes-Benz: full throttle in China ?????????!! ;-D Obrigado

why not? this has bigger space, lower price with the same Mercedes quality. And most importantly this is MUCH cheaper than S class. It was Audi who started this idea and the last generation A6L was a BIG success in china. Then BMW follows with their 5 series and now Mercedes as well.

Don't you all think standard E-Class a bit short from W210 era (W210 even looked longer as square share). This long wheel base will fly in China to help Mercedes fills up the market space between expensive S & standard E. Just like Intel CPU Celeon strategy. As I'm the owner of W210, my familiy childen always complained our W210 rear seat leg room not enough, even shorter than a Camry!!!

If your competitors all have LWB version and you haven't, what's the result? You are out !

I love the new C-class design and would like an option for a LWB version with maybe an additional 10 cm. Then I wouldn't even bother with the E-class.
