Another day, another recall

Lexus has announced plans to recall the 2010 GX 460, one week after Consumer Reports issued a "do not buy" warning.

The recall will consist of a software update to the electronic stability control (ESC) program. Worldwide, approximately 10,400 vehicles are affected.

As you may recall (no pun intended), Consumer Reports found the rear of the GX would "slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control." They slapped the sport-ute with a rare "do not buy" rating because "in real-world driving, that situation could lead to a rollover accident, which could cause serious injury or death." This prompted Lexus to halt sales of the GX, until engineers in Japan could duplicate the problem.

Oddly enough, the GX recall was announced on the same day Toyota agreed to pay a record fine of $16.4 million dollars (12.2 million euros) for the pedal-gate fiasco. As we have previously reported, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) could levy additional fines if Toyota failed to comply with all their disclosure obligations.

Doubtful thing. Typical situation in where conspiracy theory seems to be more reliable than idea of thin air- born incompetency.

agreed. blatant propaganda so that GM could start selling cars again. are you honestly telling me that a car manufacturer who spends millions of miles testing it's products both virtually and in the real world would not have tested for roll over accidents? especially when you consider the fiascos that were happening in North America in the 1990s.

Then why did they recall all the vehicles? There is no conspiracy, just blatant disregard for consumer safety and criminal negligence in favor of bottom line sales figures. One thing Toyota doesn't have in order to smooth out their recalls, is personality. The people who buy Toyota's don't care about driving, they care about reliability, and when that is missing... why would you want a Toyota in the first place? Buy a Hyundai...

I think this is a case of a company getting too big and losing sight of what made it so big in the first place, just look at GM. I think the things should be recalled for being so ugly but thats just me.

If it weren't for the Consumer Reports, this problem might have gone unnoticed.

If people were more competent drivers, cars wouldnt need all these computer-aided gizmos anyway.

So why don't you drive a 1990 Toyota Corolla then... there's nothing in that car so that you can prove your competence to the rest of the road users, just don't bash into someone else when you fail to brake properly in the wet.

Too bad we need so many electronic nannies to make up for all the poor drivers. After all, anybody can drive even if you are a 110 years old.

This only happens when the car is pushed to the limits which is unlikely in normal driving unless you are on a race track. Whoever tries to push a SUV to the limits may not live to try the second time.

it's only happened in USA...bought a cup of hot coffee, spill & burn yourself? no problem, blame & sue McDonald for not put a "caution! it's hot" statement on the cup! smoke cigarette & got cancer? no problem, blame & sue tobacco company for not give you any warning! eat junk food everyday & being too fat? no problem, blame & sue the food company for not print all the nutrition facts on the package! driving a high center of gravity SUV, push over its limits & roll over? no problem, blame & sue the auto manufacturer for not making such vehicle perform 0.9g + like a sport car!!
