A four-door hatchback version of the Fiat 500 has gotten the green light, according to Autonews.  The car is expected to hit the European market by the end of 2011, with US sales also expected, Fiat insiders told the magazine.

Look for the Fiat 500 lungo to compete with small MPVs, like the Opel Meriva and the Scion xD.  One would hope Fiat would offer engines with a bit more horsepower for the car, considering the extra weight it would likely carry with a bigger platform, more cargo space, and larger passenger cabin.

Along with this, Chrysler may be preparing a new 2013-model year subcompact sedan for North America.  That car would be built at a Fiat factory in Kragujevac, Serbia.

Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne will outline their five-year plan for North America later this week.

I certainly hope this is just a speculation and nothing more, BMW already did the mistake by making the horrid, useless crossman out of the mini which is 1 version to many of the car and I beliave that if FIAT does that sausege we see above they will go the same way. These are "fashion cars" and thats the way people see them and the way they should be threated, now if u make of them products of mass production they just become a fail product. Can anyone think of fashion when they see the limo 500 above???...neither can I

This is not a good idea. Especially if the original 500 was never available as a 5-door. At least there was a Mini Traveller in the past, which almost justifies the "Clubman". But this is just cynical marketing. The rendering looks a bit like a 500 front on an existing car, and if that is all it ends up being, then I shall not like it.
