Honda to cease Civic Type R four-door production

Honda to cease Civic Type R four-door production
2007 Honda Civic Type R (JA) 19.04.2010

Honda says it will stop production of the Civic Type R four-door model at the end of August 2010. The car was being manufactured at the company's Suzuka factory in Japan. Its predecessor had come off Honda's Swindon, Wiltshire, UK, production line.

Unlike its three-door hatchback sibling with 150 kW (201 bhp/ 204 PS), the four-door Type R's 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine was injected with extra power for a rating of 168 kW (225 bhp / 228 PS). Drive goes to the front wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Type R badge is worn by Honda's performance models and was first offered with the legendary NSX back in 1992. The first Civic Type R appeared in 1997.

Honda to Complete Production of 4-Door Civic Type R

TOKYO, Japan, April 19, 2010 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced it will discontinue production of the 4-door Civic Type R at the end of August, 2010. A purist's sports car featuring precisely tuned vehicle dynamics, the Civic Type R creates a unity between car and driver for exceptional driving pleasure. The first-generation model launched in 1997 and was produced at Suzuka Factory. The second-generation model following in 2001, was produced at Honda of the U.K. Manufacturing Ltd.* For the current, third-generation Civic Type R that was released in 2007, the production has returned to Suzuka Factory.

Type R models are specially tuned to take full advantage of the potential of the base model and provide a racing car-like driving feel. First offered on the NSX in 1992, the Type R range was added to the Integra in 1995 and to the Civic in 1997.

* Established in 1985 in Swindon, Wiltshire, U.K.

I was a privilege for me to able to bring this car back home for two weekends and my it was a joy to drive. It really is a stripped out Honda Civic that is designed to excel on the track with its slick rubbers. Unfortunately the car isn't so good on normal public roads. It is such a shame that Honda decided not to build this car. If they do, all it needs is more torque and more forgiving ride.

interesting that you said it needs a more forgiving ride, because Honda/Mugen made a even more hardcore version of this car and the ride is even harder

The 3-dr variant is still available and much more relevant to the European market, even the Japanese one for that matter. You won't have a comfy ride in that one either.

Really? Is it the JDM Mugen Civic RR JDM FD2? That's an awesome car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IQbEEVqGP0 I haven't driven the Euro Civic Type R, but I might just settle for the JDM Civic Type R instead. It is selling very fast now!

yea, the Civic Mugen RR, it has harder suspension, lighter wheels & exhaust. It's faster than the JDM normal Civic Type-R, but the price of the Mugen Civic RR special is nearly the price of a Evo X in where I live. So, to everyone out there, get a JDM Civic Type-R while you can!!!

225bhp out of a normal aspirated 2.0L engine?...That's pretty good being able to extract that much power without forced induction. Of course, Honda's are not known for high torque and there is just no way to get much torque for NA small displacement units.

Many years ago I got to test drive an Integra Type R. The accuracy of the steering and the quickness in which it changed direction was an immensely pleasurable experience. I bought a Jeep CJ-5 instead. Sigh. If only Acura could have offered a $14k discount things could have gone better in my life.
