Toyota Hilux taunts Icelands volcano moments before eruption - Top Gear takes credit
Toyota Hilux, Iceland's Eyjafallajokull volcano, 19.04.2010

A devious plot by James May

Top Gear has taken responsibility for the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafallajökull.

While details are limited, Jeremy Clarkson and James May were driving a highly-modified Toyota Hilux to the rim of Eyjafallajökull for an upcoming segment. Shortly after filming was completed, the volcano erupted and sent a cloud of ash 30,000 feet into the air.

In typical fashion, the outfit jokingly described the event as added proof that "Top Gear is responsible for almost every evil in the modern world."

Oddly enough, Toyota decided to join in by saying "With Europe's most advanced aircraft rendered powerless by the ash-filled atmosphere, it's Hilux that once again has proved itself the master of everything man and nature can put in its path."

Look for the episode to premiere this summer.

"INDESTRUCTIBLE" TOYOTA CONQUERS THE VOLCANO THAT EMPTIED THE SKIES

Hilux drives to the heart of Iceland's devastating eruption

A new chapter has been written in the world-conquering history of Toyota's mighty Hilux as it took on the ice and fire of Iceland's Eyjafallajökull volcano, just hours before its eruption brought chaos to the skies of Europe.

The legendary pick-up that Top Gear simply could not destroy and which was the first car to be driven across the Arctic to the Magnetic North Pole proved the perfect transport for scientists racing to set up monitoring equipment before the long-dormant mountain blew its top and sent a vast cloud of ash 30,000 feet into the sky.

The vehicles used for the expedition were prepared by specialist firm Arctic Trucks to the same extreme environment specification as the Hilux used by Jeremy Clarkson and James May for their historic polar expedition. With giant low pressure 38-inch tyres, the go-anywhere Hilux had the measure of every challenge in its path as it made its way through ice and snow towards the volcano's fiery heart.

With Europe's most advanced aircraft rendered powerless by the ash-filled atmosphere, it's Hilux that once again has proved itself the master of everything man and nature can put in its path.

A VW Amarok would look cooler with those fat tyres than a Hilux.

Top Gear would be better if those scripted jokes will die away Older (before Series 13) non scripted Top Gear jokes are way way better

Sorry, but it wasn't always scripted. In the last couple of series, even Producer Andy Wilman has said the show "is becoming a bit of a self-parody". They need a break, so they can think long and hard about how to make it good again without trying to force it or just exaggerate everything even more (is that even possible?). Plus the resulting comeback would be (even) more exciting than that of Doctor Who. But yes. It is STILL the best show on TV. By miles.

When the End of Days arrive I hope to be behind the wheel of either a Hilux (not possible in U.S.) or a Hummer. The real Hummer, not the dressed up Tahoe.

I hope they won't try to be the first ever tv crew to get to the pole by car... for the second time. I didn't yet throw away my tv because of those guys from Topgear. Great tv show!
