2012 Audi A8 Security First Spy Photos at Nurburgring - Its not an S8
2012 Audi S8 First Spy Photos at Nurburgring 14.04.2010

[UPDATE]  An observant or well informed WCF reader in Germany has tipped us off that this is not an S8 but instead an armoured version or special protection series.  One of the first clues can be seen in the special run flat tires which you can always tell by the reinforced inner bead that runs along the rim's edge.  Also, looking closely at the inner windows frames, they seem to be a bit beefier than usual possibly indicating the use of thicker multi-layered bullet resistant glass.  Lastly, looking through the grille, there appears to be some kind of inner shroud or reinforcement in place of the radiator.

Apr 14, 2010 - Audi recently completed the international launch programme for its all-new flagship 2011 A8 sedan. This fresh set of spy pictures show the S8 performance derivative about to test its skills against the notorious Nurburgring. These are the first spy pictures of this model.

According to Audi design director Stefan Sielaff, the S8 will influence future performance Audis in terms of design. These S cars will feature much more differentiation from normal models across the range. Styling materials will include carbon fibre and aluminium.

As far as the engine is concerned, speculation points to a smaller V8 replacing the current normally aspirated 5.2-litre V10. That motor was rated at 331 kW (444 bhp / 450 PS) so the new one should offer more. The expected transmission is a 7-speed double-clutch S Tronic.

A previous report puts the S8 under consideration for North America. The S8 goes on sale some time in 2011 as a 2012 model.

I believe Audi is putting the effort on surpassing the blends of luxury of the Mercedes and more power of the BMWs in one potion here. Better Interior quality, latest technology, quatros and higher power/weight ratios. Watch out they may outsale their competitor in the near future.

I think the S8 should have the engine from the RS6 :), this seems more like an engine testing rig in the original A8 body for chassis/engine performance. Not for styling.

they have to upgrade a bit more ive been looking foward in seein the S8 in productuion but honestly the older one looks better they have at least bump up the wheel arches and make it look more agressive and 444hp??? wtf BMW MB are over 500!! cmon Audi!! shows ur skills!

the old one had 444hp, the new one will have more. most people buy the A8 because of its decent styling, not because they want something that looks aggressive. the A8 may have less hp than BMW and Mercedes, but it's around 200kg lighter.

Thought they were going to kill the S8 due to the sales and the emissions. I think BMW and Audi both upped the anti to out power mercedes benz and they are both regret upping the power so much only to find the numbers dropped too low and have to re think engine cylinder numbers and output using superchargers or turbochargers. What did the model before have in it, a 4.2Lt V8, wonder what size engine this one will be i think audi has shot themselve in the foot with going from the 4.2 to the 5.2 V10 and now they have to match output power so people dont complain about the car having less power then the previous model

@ autoficianado , i think Benz is very worried about Audi since they have been overtaken in sales by the Bavarians.

Audi is just the flavor of the month. In a year their sales will drop, because quite frankly, until about 3 or 4 years ago, Audi was a POS car. It's also something different than an MB or BMW, which have dominated the market.

Xenicide, you seem to have the remarkable skill of predicting the future. Maybe you can be a market analyst when you grow up.

@Xenicide "Flavour of the month" = #2 in sales. And I think it is the egotistical opinion that is driving many buyers to Audi.

some spy pictures are absolutly pointless, all I see is an A8 with black rims and quad tailpipes, can anyone else spot any other diference??? Regarding the engine my money would be on either the Gallardo's v10 or a twin-turbo V8....or maybe they just get mad and put in the same engine of the future lambo Jota.....

you are right they are not showin new detaisl is specific so i guess the only reason is to keep the news about the upcoming s8 complete and besids that to hear some rumors / specualtions about the engine choice. jota s rather goin to be a v12 right? wrong direction cylinder count wise. so a v8 is minimum for a s8 if u ask me

"I was hoping for much a wider track and huge wheel arch on an S8" but no, turns out it isn't a S8, which is good, cause the A8 look way too long
