Consumer Reports: Do not buy a Lexus GX 460 due to rollover risk

Death Trap Redux

Consumer Reports has issued a warning against the Lexus GX 460, due to a potential rollover risk.

During testing, the magazine discovered the GX had problems with emergency-handling. They found that the rear "slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control."

Consumer Reports believes "in real-world driving, that situation could lead to a rollover accident, which could cause serious injury or death." This caused them to release a statement urging consumers not to buy the Lexus GX.

Toyota, battered by the recent pedal recall, was quick to respond. Spokesman Joe Tetherow said "Our engineers conducted similar tests during the development of the new GX and had no issues." He added Toyota engineers have been notified and they will attempt to duplicate the problem.

The last instance of Consumer Reports recommending a "do not buy" warning was in 2001 with the Mitsubishi Montero.

Toyota have had more than 10 years of fantastic press reviews... maybe Toyota got complacent? Gosh this thing is ugly! What's wrong with the looks of the (Euro) Landcruiser it's based on?

Agreed. The looks alone should make it a "dont buy because you will look like an idiot".

Whoever designed this vehicle... would someone kindly break his white stick and kick his dog! (forget the dog part! not the dog's fault!) :)

That's the cost of trying to be the largest automaker in the world. They found the same problems that the old GM had...it's hard to guarantee consistent top quality when you are building 17,000,000 vehicles or so...

This is a joke, this has problems with tipping over, but the Escallade and Expedition dont? Poor Toyota, the Govt is really out to get them.

This isn't a joke. This things stability control doesn't kick in until the thing is sideways.

Are you guys serious here? CR has ripped the American automakers apart for YEARS and have sold more Toyota's for Toyota than anyone else! Now they point out an obvious flaw in one Toyota and its a conspiracy??? Get over it and stop being so damn stupid.

A similar criticism was levelled at Toyota a few years back by Wheels Magazine of Australia, when an Aus market Kluger's (http://www.toyota.com.au/kluger?DCSext.LPLink=Kluger|Model) apparently flawed ESC caused it to rollover at only 80km/h.

That thing is so high and narrow, if you push on it sideways, it will tip over. No surprises here.

What a surprise fellows, the Merc A class had the same issue and, as well, it was a ridiculously ugly car. What happened to Merc? Nevertheless, I'm forced to agree that this is too much bad news for Toyota in such a short period of time. Indeed the cars have problems (apart from design), but why it didn't come up before the accelerator scandall? Why now??. Wouldn't it be a huge opportunity for the 3 from Detroit to take advantage of the pedal scandall and dig a bigger hole for the Japs so that it would take forever to get out of it? Yes it would, and it is, wherever methods they are using, they are doing it.

Toyota sales were up year over year in February-March. So even with all the bad press which they deserve, this is not about getting Toyota. I'm all for being aware of 'Big Brother' but this time, Toyota earned the swift kick in the butt, and the (rather small) fine. Remember Consumer Reports is NOT owned by the Fed or anyone else, they pride themselves on being an external body, simply seeking to review real products for real people. Fact that this is one of the ugliest cars I've seen since the Aztec is not surprise either, Toyota hasn't been designing cars for the past decade, they've just been reheating old crap.

Toyota sales are up after having one of the worst years in their history, and introducing the greatest incentives in their history. If you have a Toyota now, sell it. The resale is gonna kill you.

He's a know-it-all-americans-make-the-best-car-in-the-world guy. his only credibility lies within what he can get out of criticizing everything that's not american-made.

I disagree, my favorite cars are british. Between the Atom and the new mp4 coming out. And hell the atom has a civic motor. I'm sorry but I like enthusiast cars, not appliances.

It aint Whoopi Goldberg, but I can see where the styling can turn more than a few heads away. Thank America that we have Consumer Reports. I wonder why Toyota doesnt do any quality control of their products? CR shouldn't have said anything and just let people rollover and let the lawsuits come pouring in. The nerve of Toyota to dump their shitty products off in our country ONCE AGAIN and put our lives at risk. And once again they are denying responsibility. Its always the same bs about their engineers being unable to duplicate the problem, and there is no problem that they are aware of. This is what we come to expect from toyota and its sad. The new management is only concerned in sale volume. I wonder if congress, the president, and/or the NHTSA will pass new laws requiring all foreign products sold on US soil to pass through some sort of strict quality control. Toyota seems as if its made in China nowadays. Why is Hyundai, Daewoo, and Kia more reliable than Toyota? I think Toyota needs to fire their current management team and all their current CEO's. Put more americans in those positions, also give their employees weekends and holidays off. They're working around the clock without rest, so I can see how mistakes can be made. Unfortunately we cant sacrifice any more american lives while Toyota execs get richer and fatter by the minute.

Look at the thing. How could it NOT fall over. Its a risk you take buying this class of car. High centre of gravity and all that. This has become an issue as manufacturers all over have pushed these high profit things into the mainstream.
