BMW still top premium brand despite Audi's recent surge

BMW still top premium brand despite Audis recent surge
2010 BMW X1 SUV

Audi comes within 1,709 units of matching BMW sales

BMW is still the world's number one premium brand but not by much. Audi sales have come very close to matching BMW's for the first quarter of this year - coming in only 1,709 units behind the Bavarian brand's.

BMW had a global sale count of 265,809 units for the quarter (January to March) while for Audi the number was 264,100. BMW sales were buoyed by demand for the new X1 model. Both automakers were helped by resurgent markets, particularly the US, where overall auto sales rose 16 percent over the same period last year.

Audi is sticking to its goal of becoming the world's top-selling premium brand by 2015 with 1.5 million unit sales per year. Audi surpassed Mercedes-Benz sales for the first time this quarter too, making Mercedes the number three premium brand globally.

But Mercedes-Benz also saw a bountiful sales increase of 26 percent for the first quarter in the US, making it the number one premium brand (ahead of Lexus) in the world's largest single car market.

awaiting BMW fanboys to make some comment about dynamic superiority when clearly it's not the be all and end all when it comes to selling cars

You're right, it isn't everything, 70% of Audi's sales are fwd cars.

@Joe_Limon I read that the majority of BMW drivers had no clue their cars were rear wheel drive.

Joe, where do you get your information. Nearly every Audi sold in the US is AWD and I'm sure the majority of Audis sold elsewhere in the world are AWD as well. @uptohere no that was just the 1 series drivers.

@2010S5: Joe is actually right. See he gets his facts, and I can verify them. You are only pretty sure. Pretty sure does not mean fact. And if you looked closely, you would see that the more affordable Audis sold in the US are FWD, and they have been selling a lot more than you think. Look it up. Furthermore, Audi sells cars all over the world, most of which are the lower end cars that are not available in the US, and most of them have FWD.

Please enlighten me with a source or a report that states 70% of Audi sold are FWD. I am speaking purely from experience that I have never seen an Audi without a Quattro badge. It might have something to do with the fact that I live in the Northeast but I am reluctant to believe that 70% of all Audis sold are FWD. Yes I am aware that they do exist.

those numbers are expected if you consider that averagely the BMW is the cheapest to buy here! comparable cars of those 3 premium brand makers differ in price...the most expensive is Mercedes-Benz...when you go up in the highest price region you can see that Merc is very expensive...so this is normal that more pricey cars are less in numbers but better in income. bye

Don't know what you mean. Here in the US, the base A4 is cheaper than the 3 series sedan, A5 cheaper than the 3 coupe, A6 cheaper than the 5 series, so on so forth.

it is only 1700 more, i expect Audi to be the world?s biggest luxury automaker by Q3 at the latest with the new A1 (which will sell like hot cakes) starting off in May.

The new 5-series has also been released into the market and will sell by the thousands as well. I don't think the A1 will sell more than the 5er.

the 5-series will sell well but is already in BMW?s line-up, the new generation will add a few % but the A1 is a whole new product and only 1 grand more expensive than the top-selling Polo. i expect it to sell like hell.

Superior is superior... let us look at all three brands historically. 10 years ago no one would have been caught dead in an Audi, that's how ugly and crapy it was... Hands down they have evolved. I still hate it though except for the R8 & the overpriced RS series... Much love,

Too bad some of BMW's cars are ugly, such as the X1 shown. Lets hope it is the better looking ones that are sold more.

Why do u keep arguing about this???? In the end of it all what matters is the brand we love the most and not sales figures, u only defend Mercedes, BMW or Audi because its ure favorite brand and thats the bottom line. Personnaly I am a Mercedes-Benz fan and nothing in the world is ever gonna change that. On the good side for Mercedes the increase in 26% in its sales making it the first Luxury brand in the largest market and on top of that those sales aren't based on low range cars (see BMW's 1-Series or Audi A1 coming) but on upper market see E-Klass, E-Coupe/Cabrio, plus the low segment A-Klass is an a now waiting for its replacement. So please cut the bias and be more "on target"

just had a drive in the new 535.. pretty much the perfect car. blows the competition away in every dept, which is the e and the xf. audi? is that a korean brand?

Surpise, surprise says BMW fan-boy! I would expect it to be the best since it is the newest and competes largely against a 7 year old A6. And I would buy the E over all of them. The new 5er is just another addition to a long list of over-rated BMWs.

in the long run sales do tell the story of how a brand was in a particular time segment. Audi BMW Mercedes all are very much the top brand in the world and i suspect they will stay there However, each one favors one over the other for his personal and maybe well known reasons. I personally just test drived the E250 coupe and it was really perfect !! maybe the best Mercedes in my opinion,,, the Audi A5 was really poor and plasticy in the interior

In my opinion, the car that delivers the most Joy to its owner is the winner here. Simply go test drive all 3 cars in their competing class's, then decide for yourself. That is how you predict the future. BMW has the biggest fan-base for a reason.

 velsatis velsatis
"BMW has the biggest fan-base for a reason." Where did u saw those numbers??? can u tell us ure sourse??? I obviously disagree and im sure without a shadow of a doubt that Mercedes-Benz has the largest fan-base and most importantly, more loyal, because both BMW and Audi have "new fans", Mercedes has the Fans that wouldn't swap badge for anything. But at least I am humble enough to say I cannot prove this has there is no source to tell us which has most fans. Mercedes represents the classic luxury car, BMW represents sport-luxury, Audi......a pimped VW????lol

I'm sorry, to the person that said "Furthermore, Audi sells cars all over the world, most of which are the lower end cars that are not available in the US, and most of them have FWD." Lower end cars that are not available in the US? Audi don't sell ANY RS Models in The US.

If this is true, it just proves that people have no taste. BMW makes some of the ugliest SUV/Wagon/minivan/cars/crossover thingies, ie. 5GT and X6

Ok, since most of you are wrong, here are some facts to think about. Source from Auto Data, & Automotive news, which I bet most of you are not subscribers or in the business. 2009 US sales BMW 196,502 units Audi 82,716 units BMW 1 series 2009 sales 11,182 units Audi A3 2009 sale 3,874 units BMW 3 series sale (all body style) 90,960 units Audi A4/S4,A5/S5 48,249 units BMW Z4 2009 market share 46.3% Audi TT/S 2009 market share 7.4% MB SLK 2009 market share 34% BMW 5 series 2009 sale 39,719 units Audi A6/s6 2009 sale 6,786 units BMW 7 series 2009 sales 9,257 units Audi A8/S8 2009 sales 1,463 units BMW 2009 segment market share 15.2% Audi 2009 segment market share 6.4% You get the picture. In summary, in the US, Audi is not competitive against BMW. They might have a good Q1, but lets wait and see december's YTD. I don't have exact figures for industry incentive report, but BMW achieved all this without resorting to huge incentives. Another thing to think about, the world wide sales report are off, because more Audis are put into fleet sales than BMWs.

Through March, Audi us sales 21,315 BMW 46,323 units BTW, BMW car club of America has over 75,000 active members. Audi clube NA has about 10,000 members. So who has a bigger fan base?
