Spies near Audi offices in Germany caught shots of a prototype version of the Audi A7.  The swept back four door is in testing ahead of its late 2010 German market release.

Based on the Audi Sportback concept seen at the NAIAS last year, the Audi A7 will be built for customers looking for a less conservative car than the A8.  In these pictures we can see the car's third brake light mounted above, and running almost the entire width, of the rear glass.  The LEDs here look like they will be matched with LED lighting in the rear clusters mounted on either side of the trunk.  Bright headlights will match up with fog lights integrated into the bumper.

The car is expected to get a 3.0-liter direct-injection petrol engine, as well as a tubocharged V8 petrol, and a V8 turbodiesel.  The engines will be paired to a seven-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, with exhaust leading to dual or quad tailpipes.

Audi is expected to introduce the 2011 Audi A7 either in late August at Auto Salon Moscow, or in October at the Paris Motor Show.  After appearing in European dealerships later this year, the car will be introduced in the US in 2011 at about $80,000.

What else can this be besides an oversized A5 Sportback.

i would have made it a 4 door coupe to differ more from the a5 sportback...not a big long hatch

It IS a 4-door coupe. The direct competition are the CLS, 5-series GT, Panamera. It is more versatile than a sedan and sexier than a Avant. It is the best of both worlds and besides that attracts new customers who are looking for more individualism and fresh ideas.

I hope it has 4 doors like you say, but i think it will be a 5 door like the a5 sportback... And the shape from side view...looks like a hatch to me

Apparently the previous A8 was heading towards a sport-back configuration but Ferdinand Piech disapproved due to sales concerns. This is heading more towards the 5-Series GT, not the CLS. I'll take one.

Such an useless car, another blurred image of the A8, A6, A5, A4, A3...not an audi hater but what's with the aggressive competition? Instead of focusing on bringing something new to the market like merc or bmw do, they are constantly trying to build cars that others already have...IMO

Don?T worry Audi know their business, they won`t bring such fugly and useless cars as the R-class or X6.

Isn't it going to cut too close to the A5 sports back model? doubt australia will see this model with new A5 sports back on slow sales. Is this car meant to be longer or something from the A5

it?s based on the next A6 platform, so significantly larger/longer than the A5-Sportback, which is based on the A4. it is like a larger brother to the A5 sportback, but a bit more innovative in Design and Tec. in and outside.

Sorry but I can't see the coupe styling on this thing, all I see is as bigger A5 4d hatchback, plus has someone else pointed out before, why do these pimped VW's have to look all the same??????When a new car is oficialy presented im usualy execited and wanna see it fast, but with VW that doesnt really happen on me, I already know....Is anyone curious about the looks????I know am not, I already know what its gona look like

So you take the A7 Sportback Concept from a couple of years ago, scale down the exterior details (lights, wheels, etc.) and the interior to fall in line with the rest of the range, then drop a few A6 engines into it (not all at once obviously). It's not difficult to imagine. But then, what German car is hard to imagine in terms of looks? The next BMW, I suppose. Only because of their crazy niche models and over-design.
