Toyota faces second fine for slow disclosure of accelerator pedal defect
Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., placed full-page newspaper ads in more than 20 major media markets throughout the United States. The Jan. 31, 2010, ads concern Toyota?s actions involving the sticking accelerator pedal recall.

Two separate gas pedal defects may lead to second fine

Toyota is now facing the prospect of a second fine by US government regulators over faulty gas pedals.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has already issued a record 16.4 million dollar fine against Toyota for failing to declare a gas pedal defect to authorities and not issuing a recall until four months after they learned of the problem.

Now, according to the NHTSA, Toyota actually found two separate defects in its gas pedals, both of which were kept from authorities. In the same letter issued to Toyota on April 5 informing them of the initial fine, the NHTSA warned the Japanese automaker that a second fine may be levied for the other defect.

Toyota has already recalled about 8 million vehicles worldwide related to problems with stuck accelerators.

The company has until April 19 to contest the fine in US courts.

...I hope that the preceding comments were a bad attempt at humor... You hate GM we get it. That does not change the fact Toyota in it's quest to become the largest automaker in the world became more like the OLD GM and made bad products. This is not a joke as these defects have cost several lives and Toyota is rightfully under fire for it's mistakes.

And I hope your comments about Toyota are a joke, because they are ridiculous...Toyota did not manufacture the pedals that got recalled, CTS did. But do you hear Toyota passing the blame? Do you even know what they are doing for the recalls? Did you know that the floormat recall has to do with stupid people putting a floormat on top of another floormat? Do you hear Toyota blaming driver error? Before you start bashing someone, you should get your facts right.

quick, I think you're jumping to conclusions too quickly. CTS may have manufactured the pedals, but Toyota designed them, and approved of their manufacturing. Secondly, do you know how Toyota fixed the floor mat problem? with zip ties! haha talk about cheap. I guess the price of a new car doesn't get you much these days from Japan. And finally, pedals don't automatically pin themselves as most of the reports indicate. I'd say there is a 95% chance this is an electrical gremlin. After all, these "fixed" cars are still accelerating unintendedly. Toyota isn't jumping on the fix because it wasn't as cheap as a pin, or twist ties.

Joe, I am not jumping to conclusions, I work in Toyota Service, so I just simply know what is going on. There is a ton of bad information out there, just like your exact comment. Zip ties??? What is your source on that? That is absolutely insane if you believe that. The 90L potential floormat interferance recall is this exactly: shaving off about 1/2 an inch off the bottom of the gas pedal, replacing the tibia pad with a thinner one, and programming the brake override on vehicles that don't already have it. All of this makes more clearance for a sliding floormat, and gives drivers the ability to override the gas pedal input. This is all because people don't use the Toyota floormat with the clips that hold it in place, they buy a cheaper on from Walmart, then put another plastic one on top that will slide up to the pedals... Don't believe everything the news tells you.

Ok Joe, I take it that you don't go to the source for answers. Just like when your PS3 has a problem, you don't contact Sony, you would rather ask your cheat code website instead....not smart. Well, I don't think you all can access this website without a login and password because it is only availible to Toyota employees, but here it is anyway: http://tis.toyota.com/t3Portal/resources/jsp/siviewer/index.jsp?href=cp/T-CP-90L-B510-D/xhtml/T-CP-90L-B510-D.html&locale=en&t3id=T-CP-90L-B510-D&User=false&publicationNumber=T-CP-90L-B510-D&objType=cp&docTitle=Safety+Recall+90L+-+2007-2010+Camry+%28CTS+Pedals%29%3A+Potential+Floor+Mat+Interference+%28Technical+Instructions%29&docid=2655533&context=int

I still don't see what gives us the authority to fine manufacturers.

It depends, is hiding life threatening defects a crime? I think Toyota should have just issued a recall when they discovred the defect a few years ago.

Misinformation, media hype??? People died what don't you get and State Farm insurance contacted Toyota in 2007 because of an unusual high number of claims with unintended acceleration and now they want Toyota to pay them back for those claims or they will raise insurance rates for those driving Toyota's... So wth does this have to do with GM, or media hype?? Nothing, Toyota denied problems and pulled wool over peoples eyes covering up problems so that they could deceivingly come across as a high quality and safe manufacturer... By the way Consumer Reports is now warning people not to buy the new Lexus GX460 because it will roll over and potentially kill you. Suck it Toyota!!!

I have worked with Toyota before...and knowing Toyota they will try to hide their defects like any other Manufacturer. For example, they tried to hide the below problems in the Previous Toyota Altis Make Year 2003 (or Corrolla Altis in the US) from the public: 1. Floorboard vibration - caused by poorly balanced Driveshafts and/or Transmission Mountings 2. A/T Transmission Whining Noise at High RPM above 4000 RPM Toyota only advised the Local dealers to change the Driveshaft/Mounting/Transmission if the customer complains. Can you believe it??? Well actually I'm not that surprised as I know for a fact through my work experience that almost all Automaker has a Skeleton in their Closet and they will try to hide for all of eternity if Possible.

 THEBENCHMARK THEBENCHMARK
I heard that Toyota let these issues go on for so long because they were too busy doing research and development to further the Japanese governments nuclear weapon program. I beleive they are manufacturing small, easily portable nuclear devices for detonation in major U.S. cities in retalliation for the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With an agenda like that why would they care to make safe cars just to protect American lives..... By the way if you believe any of the stuff I just said, you and hata0101 should start a fan club.
