New M5 will come with a 4.4 liter bi-turbo V8 with 578 bhp

Here is a fine example of what the upcoming BMW M5 F10 could look like. Bimmerpost forum member Alpine325ci painstakingly photoshopped bits and pieces of existing photos taken at the Geneva Motor Show to create these amazingly realistic renders.

The new M5 will feature a downgrading in engine size, with BMW dropping the 5.0 liter V10 in favor of the 4.4 liter bi-turbo V8 already in use in the X5 M and X6 M. But that engine will be tuned to a more powerful rating than both the original V10 and its variant in the two X models. Power on the M5 will be boosted to 578 bhp with the torque rating climbing to 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) - a whopping 40 percent more than the previous M5.

Astoundingly, BMW says the M5 will consume about 30 percent less fuel than its predecessor thanks to the Bavarian brand's EfficientDynamics technologies. A kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) may also be made available in the new M5.

The next M5 is expected to be introduced sometime near the end of this year. Market launch will likely be sometime around the spring of 2011.

I just hope the Sound of the 4.4 is much better than the x models. i think the x models sound a little weak, especially compared to the 5.0 V10. however it must be said that im glad its making a comeback to the E39's! It has to be awesome ... its an M5

Holy Moly. That's a gorgeous looking M5 even though I'm really not a fan of new 5-Series.

I saw this car in real [not the m5 but the normal version] & it looks ok but not exciting at all & this new m5 it looks ok since it got the m3 front & rear bumpers.

wow keep in mind to what could happen if they added KERS. I would estimate about a total of around 650hp and 650 torques with KERS enabled. This would blow the competition out. I really hope it includes KERS. King is back, this time with torques that it has been missing since the E39 years.

Nice, but I'll miss the NA high revving M's.

I think that the high rev NA engine is irreplaceable! However, there's sacrifice muct be made in order to combine power output, and fuel economy both at the same time!

I love the E39, but dislike the E60, so let's see the finish product, but this rendering does look pretty good, but a bit too much M3 stuff on it.

The major criticsm of the previous M5 was its overly technical nature detracted from the driving pleasure. Hopefully BMW will get back to its roots of an elegant, straight-forward machine. The Merc E63 is sensational, however, and it will take a lot to beat it.

I doubt this new M5 will be a simple straight-forward machine. The new 5 series range isn't even available with a conventional manual gearbox. BWM's sights are on futuristic designs - both from a visual and a technological point of view. It has been that way ever since the early '00s when they released iDrive. I believe the new M5 will be just as good as the E63 or Jag XF-R or Audi RS6. Probably more driver-oriented, in typical BMW fashion. As for the engine sound, no turbo V8 will ever come close to raising the hairs on your back like a N/A V10 revving to 8250 r/min would.
