All-New Mercedes C-Class Coupe Confirmed - Production Begins in Bremen 2011

Mercedes-Benz plans to begin production of a new, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, with sales and assembly scheduled for a 2011 launch.  A press release from the automaker marks the first time the car has been confirmed officially.

The coupe will be manufactured in Bremen, Germany, next to the three other C-Class models, including the GLK SUV.  All four models will be produced on the same flexible line at the facility, which is also responsible for the E-Class, SL and SLK.

When the C-Class Coupe hits the market, it will serve as a replacement to the CLC, according to a Mercedes press release.  It will likely be sold at about the same time as the facelifted C-Class four-door and five-door, and will most definitely not look like the CLC sketches we previously revealed.

"We went back and studied what made our coupes so popular in the past," an unidentified source told Autocar.  "If you look at some of the more successful two-door models Mercedes-Benz has produced, you can see a direct relationship between them and their four-door stablemates."

The new coupe is expected to look more like the other C-Class models, and less like the cancelled CLK.  The entire C-Class lineup will be due for its fourth generation introduction in 2014, meaning this version of the two-door will only be available for a few years.

Because of this, the automaker is not expected to release a convertible version of this particular two-door.  "We did look at an open-top version but in the end the costs were too high given the short model life," the source told Autocar.

Mercedes-Benz plant Bremen: Bremen plant to produce additional model of the C Class model range as of 2011

  • Development as a competence centre: Bremen plant expanding production operations to include Coupé of the C-Class
  • New variant to be produced in addition to the C-Class Saloon, the C-Class Estate and the GLK as of 2011
  • Flexible production: Coupé to be produced with three existing models on a single line

Peter Schabert, Head of the Bremen plant: "Decision another milestone on our way to becoming the C-Class competence centre and a clear sign of trust in Bremen team's capabilities and standards."

Bremen - The Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen is gearing up for the production of a fourth model of the high-volume C-Class model range. As of 2011, a Coupé will be added to a flexible production line, which already produces the three existing models. This will be a new addition to Bremen's current production portfolio in the C-Class segment, comprising the Saloon, the Estate and the compact GLK sport utility vehicle (SUV).

"The decision by the Board of Management to produce the Coupé version of the current C-Class here in Bremen as well represents another important milestone on our way to becoming Mercedes' competence centre for the C-Class and is a clear sign of the trust in the Bremen team's capabilities and standards," says Peter Schabert, Head of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen.

The Bremen plant is developed into the worldwide competence centre for the high-volume C-Class model series. Allocating production of the new Coupé to the plant is in keeping with this strategy. As announced in December 2009, the launch of the next generation of the C-Class at the plant as of 2014 will see production of the C-Class Saloon for markets in Europe concentrated at a single location together with the production of the other C-Class model variants.

Flexible production

The Bremen plant is already demonstrating the flexibility of its production operations by producing three models (C-Class Saloon, C-Class Estate and GLK) on a single assembly line. The vehicles are able to pass along the assembly line in any conceivable order precisely as customer orders require, irrespective of model, variant (right- or left-hand drive, all-wheel or rear-wheel drive) and equipment. From 2011 the Bremen plant will be integrating a fourth model into the production process in the guise of the Coupé, demonstrating the plant's flexibility once again.

Production portfolio of the Bremen plant

In addition to the models of the C-Class model series, vehicles belonging to the E-Class are also produced in Bremen, with the Coupé and Cabrio running in flexible configuration on a single production line. The roadsters of the SL- and SLK-Class are also produced exclusively in Bremen. With a workforce of around 12,600, the Mercedes-Benz plant is the largest private-sector employer in the region.

The one profile sketch featured is full of win, and would be a great direction to go for Benz. It reminds me of Porsche's 928 S4 but with an SLS AMG nose. If Benz can keep that sweeping, squat, aggressive look for the car (rather than the bubbly girl car look with the goofy VW Beetle greenhouse) then it should do well.

Nahh, they will find a way to screw this thing up, just like they did with that hideous CLC.

Love the concept. Great. But... I'm confused at the same time. If this is going to be based on the 4th generation C-class, and assuming the next gen will get even bigger following the trend the manufacturers are, how will this car differ from the E-Coupe? As the E-coupe is already based on the C-class platform. Canibalism? Please, please Mercedes, keep the size down!

the E class coupe uses the C class chassis because is doesn't make sens to shorten the E class chassis when they already have a shorter chassis available. also the E class coupe shares 60% of the components with the E class , i don't see how this makes it based on the C class.

Unfortunately (and regrettably) I agree with renegade...

Make the 3rd to last one a reality and we've got a shot at a nice multi-use fastback.

Couldn't agree more about the version seen in side profile. That would be a serious check mark for the Benz party...the current version is beyond hideous but I must say that I've become positevely used to it over the years.. This is a much better direction.

that coupe looks good , but i don't think is has enough room in the back. i think the second to last one would be more realistic, unless they decide to make it a 2 seater.

Being in same frequency with Alfafox5 and with renegade in same time I started to believe that coupe will be built in next gen platform.

So it's really a 2dr C-Class hatchback...like the W203 C-Coupe. Since they have a B-Class now(which they didn't have when the W203 C-Coupe was introduced) I hope they decide to go a little bit more upscale with this one.

I don't trust MB in the C class segment. I have one and have had nothing but problems. Chrome peeling off, axile constantly being replaced, plastic pieces falling off and I'm the only one that drives it!!!! Now the ac comes on by itself when I hit a bump. No more, never again, not matter how good it looks.

If you're referring to the W204 (the one this Coupe is based on), then either you're very very unlucky or you're exaggerating (or it's not true...); Mercedes tested the W204 over around 15 million miles in all sorts of conditions, plus loads of tests done in their laboratories testing the car as a whole and the separate components one by one. In fact, recent JD Power Surveys confirm that the C-Class is one of the best vehicles in its segment...

The CLC nomenclature should actually have stood for Cutting Long Corners! Hope MB don't with this one! The fact that MB never made an AMG version of the C-class Sports Coupe speaks volumes. For this all-new version to be a success, it MUST have it (provided it's dynamically competent on a race track, of course). Concept designs hardly translate well into production (CLS excepted), but MB must make this one an exception.
