Hennessey Venom GT Officially Revealed [Video]

725 bhp, 1000 bhp, and 1200 bhp

After several delays, Hennessey Performance has released the first official images of the Venom GT supercar.

Based on the Lotus Elise/Exige, the Venom GT "combines a high-tech, lightweight British chassis with a powerful American V8." Speaking of the latter, power comes from a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V8 engine (from Corvette ZR1 fame) with 725 bhp (541 kW / 735 PS). If that doesn't seem good enough, Hennessey will also offer 1000 bhp (746 kW / 1014 PS) and 1200 bhp (895 kW / 1217 PS) twin-turbo V8s.

Thanks to carbon fiber bodywork and carbon fiber wheels, the Venom GT has a curb weight of less than 2,400 lbs (1,071 kilos). This enables the 1200 bhp model to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 272 mph (440 km/h). If Hennessey is correct, the Venom GT will easily surpass the Bugatti Veyron's top speed of 254 mph (408 km/h). Should that fail to impress you, Hennessey also says the Venom GT will rocket from 0-100 mph (161 km/h) in 5.3 seconds, 0-150 mph (241 km/h) in 8.9 seconds, and 0-200 mph (322 km/h) in 14.3 seconds.

Other performance goodies include a Brembo braking system (with 6-piston calipers up front and 4-piston calipers in rear clamping down on 15-inch carbon ceramic rotors), a Ricardo six-speed gearbox, a programmable traction control system, an adjustable suspension, and Michelin PS2 tires.

Production will be limited to 10 units a year, and four have already been sold. Hennessey has previously stated the 1000 bhp model will have a base price of $600,000 (€444,863 / £400,154).

According to John Hennessey, "This is not the first time that Britain and America have joined forces to produce a weapon of mass propulsion. Over fifty years ago the American-built P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft was flown into history powered by a British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Today the Hennessey Venom GT promises to set a new standard of power to weight ratio in the rarefied air of today's supercar market."

SEALY, TEXAS & SILVERSTONE, ENGLAND, March 29, 2010 - Hennessey Performance is pleased to introduce the first official images of its Venom GT supercar. Based upon the Lotus Elise, the Venom GT combines a high-tech, lightweight British chassis with a powerful American V8.

"This is not the first time that Britain and America have joined forces to produce a weapon of mass propulsion", said company founder and president, John Hennessey. "Over fifty years ago the American-built P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft was flown into history powered by a British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Today the Hennessey Venom GT promises to set a new standard of power to weight ratio in the rarefied air of today's supercar market."

SOMETIMES LESS EQUALS MORE
In the case of the Venom GT, less weight means more performance. The Venom GT will have a production curb weight of less than 2,400 lbs (1,071 kilos) aided by its lightweight carbon fiber bodywork and carbon fiber wheels. Stopping power is delivered via Brembo brakes with 6-piston calipers up front and 4-piston calipers in rear clamping down on 15-inch carbon ceramic rotors.

SOMETIMES MORE EQUALS MORE
The Venom GT's base power plant is the supercharged 6.2 liter LS9 V8 (the same as in the Corvette ZR1) tweaked by Hennessey to 725 bhp. The company will also be offering 1000 bhp and 1200 bhp twin turbo V8 engine variants. The mid-engine V8 will transmit its power to the rear tires via a Ricardo 6-speed gearbox.

POWER WITH CONTROL
Hennessey plans to manage power output by using a programmable traction control system. CFD (computational fluid dynamic) tested bodywork and down force will also help keep the Venom stable at speed. An active aero system with adjustable rear wing will deploy under varying conditions on both the road and racetrack. An adjustable suspension system will allow ride height adjustments according to speed and driving conditions. Finally, power will be put to the ground via massive Michelin PS2 tires.

POWERED BY THE USA, BUILT IN THE UK
Hennessey will be building the power plants at its Texas facility. The engines will then be air freighted to the company's assembly facility near Silverstone, England where the Venom GT is built and tested. Venom GT buyer will be offered a 1-day driver orientation and instruction program by a Hennessey factory test driver, at a track in the UK or USA prior to delivery.

LIMITED PRODUCTION
The company plans to establish a network of Venom GT dealers and distributors in the Middle East, Europe, Russia, Australia and Asia. Production is limited to just 10 vehicles per year and the company already has orders for 4 Venom GT's.

After seeing all those sketches, here comes the real thing. And I think.... well, nothing really. It is just an Exige on steriods. :/

N2O Purge: Strange that a person with Nitrous in their name doesn't like a vehicle with increased power.

With 1200 hp and 1 ton only of weight this car will not have enough grip on the road.

Exactly. With stupid rich guys wrecking Enzos, Veyrons and Zondas I predict that we'll hear about this hot number making the wrecked exotics list real soon. I'm not wishing that on anyone. I'm just saying... Who knows what to do with that thing. It's a beast.

@ Grave , downforce.

Downforce only works at speed. Matching that 0-60 figure will still take some serious pedal control.

Ooh. How amazing. A featherweight plastic arrow with 1200hp goes really fast in a straight line. Woo, effing, hoo. I can't even be bothered to express disliking towards this car anymore. I just 'nothing' it. Much like the 262mph Keating TKR or the poorly-named SSC Ultimate Aero. Just plastic bodies with blown Corvette engines in them. Big deal. Well done for doing the same old thing and getting numbers better than a car that came out 5 years ago. But you can keep your fast car. I'll have a good one instead.

You're right. My shed-built Elise engine transplant project never really got off the ground...

It looks pretty good to me, and it reminds me of the AC Cobra, huge American V8 with tons of power and very little weight. sounds like an absolute disaster that will happen

This is a proper. Car I mean they veyron didn't handle well to anyways this car has way more down force didn't say anything about brakes ..

That was difficult to understand, but I think you said the Veyron didn't handle well. Ever drive one? No, I haven't either, but people who have driven it have compared it to an Elise. A 4WD, 1.9 tonne Elise, but an Elise nonetheless. And how do you know how much downforce each car produces?

@ Mikeado he`s from 91 and he`s Felipe, leave him... if it was Fritz form 70-80`s would make sense arguing xD

ALWAYS loved Hennessey! Surprised this isn't another Viper (kinda odd they stuck with the name "Venom"). But a Elise. Love it.

like Carroll Shelby once said "It's a massive motor in a tiny, lightweight car."
