Getting soft with age

Our spies have caught the 2011 Ford Explorer undisguised. The spy photographer states, "We caught a Ford Explorer completely camouflage-free when a gust of wind yanked the cover off of a covered prototype during transit. We snapped a series of photos of the clean prototype while the poor transport driver scrambled to recover the sensitive cargo."

Inspired by the Explorer America concept, which debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, the production model resembles the Escape and the Edge. It features a bold grille, projector-beam headlights, and sculpted doors.

Under the hood, engine options will likely include a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 355 hp (265 kW / 360 PS) and 350 lb-ft (474 Nm) of torque.

Riding on the same platform as the redesigned Taurus, the Explorer will come standard with front-wheel drive (all-wheel drive will be optional) and also feature for the first time inflatable seat belts.

With production scheduled to begin later this year, look for a possible unveiling at the New York Auto Show next week.

It looks like its FWD, which is to say some what femine, with some RWD cues. Decent effort to look like older Explorers. I don't think its for me, I still prefer RWD, but its probably a much better explorer all things considered.

It has a lot of the Land Rover LRX in it. I like it, very handsome; not as bulky and overweight as older explorers..

i am curious .. how will they put this in the market compared to the edge ?? Explorer were quite a big SUV....but imo this new explorer doesn't look that big anymore... will it canibalize the edge sales number ?

Wow ... this is one nice looking SUV! I hope it will be exported to Europe, because i sure like it! It has something to do with the LRX and Edge .. but it's cool looking without copying the other named cars !

Based on a car platform, it looks like a larger brethren to the Ford Edge, albeit on a new platform. It will capture the changing market but kill the core engineering of the original Explorer. Sad to see the truck-based Explorer become extinct.

boring car that rides like an unforgiving truck. would rather have a honda crv for the money and whats that have several thousands left over.

lol, the car is not even out yet and you are already criticising its ride quality and dynamics. And comparing it to a CRV, thanks for the laugh.

Seeing how it is FWD, and based on the size compared to the person i would have to say it's not the explorer. Closer to the Escape which is indesperate need of a facelift, or an entirely new model. But i'm 99% sure it's not an explorer.

It may be better in power and quality than the older exploreres, but this just looks too soft. I mean the bonnet belongs on a aygo.
