Lewis Hamilton was on Friday night charged by local police after he was caught doing smoky burnouts and 'fish-tailing' in a Mercedes road car near the Albert Park circuit.

At 9.15pm in St Kilda, within sight of the turn 13 section of the formula one circuit, the 2008 world champion was pulled over by a Victorian Police divisional van.

We reported earlier on Friday that the 25-year-old McLaren driver's company car this weekend is a silver 2010 E500 saloon.

Police charged Hamilton, who will be summoned, with improper use of a motor vehicle and have impounded the car for 48 hours. Police confirmed that a 25-year-old Briton has been charged.

Senior Constable Scott Woodford said the man was "extremely cooperative" and "fairy disappointed" with the incident. Wire reports said Hamilton was "visibly upset" and "worried this would dent his reputation".

The incident coincides with a push within F1 for better road safety, with all teams contributing to the FIA's global campaign.

In a statement issued by McLaren, Hamilton said: ?"This evening, I was driving in an over-exuberant manner and, as a result, was stopped by the police.

"What I did was silly, and I want to apologise for it."

Lewis is Officially a 'HOON Driver' in Australia, get caught 2 more times and in some Australian states your car will be crushed and you will be banned from driving for a year.

Too bad that cop was pushed around the playground in his childhood. Any real man would have shaken his hand and asked for a photo with him. I would be honored to see one of the best drivers in the world tearing up a benz.

I went to a brilliant Mercedes event at Brooklands last year, Lewis was doing Dohnuts and power sliding MP4-23 round the skid pan they have there. Very very impressive driving. Aus shoud be glad to have the show in town, I'm sure someone of that skill is perfectly safe. Went to te race there two years back, it was great.

Welcome to the Peoples Republik of Australia. Here you have one of the best drivers in the world and you're going to give him shit for having a little fun...? I would bet my life that Hamilton has more control over a car going sideways at 100k than that cop does at a standstill.

For those who don't know, Australia is quickly becoming a police state. Victorian police are regarded as the best example of overly-exuberant police. Sadly, the Australian public have swallowed the speeding kills rubbish and have accepted speed cameras and laughable judgment from Police. Time to take the GP circus to Sydney. Melbourne does not deserve it after such a farce, wankers.

Yeah well us WANKERS have the Lowest Road (Death) toll in the World (some Australian States), in mine, of a few million people we had around 800 deaths a year 5 years ago, now it is less than 100. Camera's and Seizing of Cars, and almost Zero Alcohol and Drug driving tolerance....The USA are a minority, other countries do not tolerate POWER or SPEED at all. A MAZDA Miata is all you really need for speed thrills..

Just so happens AUSTRALIA Does F1 Better than ANY other Country as a Host....ADELAIDE in the 80's-90's which Changed forever "How" motor-sport events where hosted and made profitable, now Melbourne just stole the F1 and copied Adelaide's successful formula...like every one else.

Actually it's not a matter of becoming a police state, or cutting poppies down. If you let Lewis off then a legal precedent is set which allows anybody to act out on the roads. And that will end up hurting people. Lewis would have been in control, but everybody else who acted similarly would have not been in control.
