Transmissions available are a new 8-speed automatic, a new "Sport Automatic" 8-speed and an optional 6-speed manual. Engines involved are a 3.0-litre twin scroll turbo worth 221 kW (296 bhp / 300 PS) and 300 lb-ft (407 Nm) of torque, while the 4.4-litre V8 twin turbo motor kicks out 294 kW (395 bhp / 400 PS).

Pricing Announced for New BMW 5 Series Sedan

535i and 550i to start at $50,475 and $60,575 respectively

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - March 25, 2010... BMW has announced pricing for the all-new 2011 BMW 535i and 550i Sedans. The new 535i Sedan will start at $50,475, and the V-8 powered 550i will start at $60,575, including $875 Destination & Handling. The 535i receives BMW's newest 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline, while the 550i will be powered by BMW's reverse-flow 4.4-liter Twin Power turbo V8. Both will feature the new 8-speed automatic transmission. Even with these enhancements, the base-prices for both models are lower than their 2010 predecessors - $1,650 in the case of the 535i and $900 lower for the 550i. The 535i and 550i continue a tradition that is the hallmark of the ultimate driving machine - the option of a 6-speed manual transmission at no cost. The choice of a manual transmission has been a 5 Series tradition through all six generations since its introduction to the US 35 years ago.

As on any other BMW vehicle, BMW Ultimate Service, $0 maintenance for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles, is included.

The all-new 2011 BMW 5 Series combines a whole new look, inside and out, with new powertrain options and even more cutting-edge technology. Design features emblematic of BMW are to be found at the front with its kidney grille inclined slightly forward.

When equipped with the Sport Package, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan includes Adaptive Drive, which encompasses Driving Dynamics Control, Electronic Damper Control, and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle's wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.

The top-of-the-range BMW 550i arrives with BMW's "reverse-flow" V-8 engine featuring twin turbochargers and High Precision direct injection for maximum output of 400 hp. The new inline-6 of the BMW 535i features a single twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision direct injection, and, combined for the first time with turbocharging, VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology. It delivers a maximum output of 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. As noted, the 535i and 550i will be available with a choice of 6-speed manual transmission, BMW's new 8-speed automatic transmission, or new "Sport Automatic" 8-speed.

BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are featured in appropriate combinations on each model, including features such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, a gearshift point indicator, active cooling air flaps, and on-demand operation of engine accessory drives. Lightweight materials are used to balance the vehicle. Components such as doors, hood, front fenders, and suspension assemblies are made of aluminum.

The driver assistance systems offered with the new 5 Series include an all-new Parking Assistant, Top View cameras, and Frontal Collision Warning with application of the brakes when ordered with Active Cruise Control plus Stop & Go. Other driver assistance features available include Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning, a Head-Up Display, BMW Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection.

Package and individual option pricing is noted below. The all-new 2011 BMW 5 Series makes its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show and will arrive at US BMW Centers on June 19, 2010.

Is it just me or does all new cars in this segment all look somewhat quite generic in styling? The initial look reminds me strongly of the current 3 series-especially the back.

I think they're clustering around an aerodynamic sweet spot. In car history, I don't think the current season will be remembered as a high point in automobile styling.

YAWN..... the 5er is boring looking. i think the designers just got lazy and smash up a 3er and 7er and give it to the board to be safe. the E class appears to be more dynamic and interesting.

I still prefer the current (well older now) model, this one is just too meh and generic.

iirc there was a rather dramatic change in BMW about a decade ago when iirc one of the Quandt family, who own most of BMW, said that all BMW's were looking the same and there was not a great visual distinction between 3,5,7 series etc and that change WOULD happen. Well "Bangle" happened and the motoring press called the new cars ugly and made funny names for them while the cars actually held some appeal to customers. Afaik more new customers were gained by the change than old customers lost. Styling is cyclical and from what I see it is BMW's opinion that a return to more conservative styling is in order. When that gets stagnant I guess BMW will find a talented, brave leader to change style direction again and get more fresh blood into the BMW pool. It's a choice of following the crowd or leading the pack, the "Bangle bum" seen on many cars after the E65/E66 seemed to find it's way onto quite a few cars.

It has the same 7er interior with less buttons.

Well, I love the current 3 series look, and hate the current 5 series look -- I think this styling is in the right direction -- I have a 5 series now E39, couldn't buy the E60 due to its lexus ugliness, but this F10 is perfect... I'm loving it very very much. Can't wait till they come to the second-hand market. :)

The headlamps on the current 5 series looks like women's eye glasses from the 50s.

The pricing is very agressive. If the 5 really is a mini 7, you're getting huge value for your money. And, this is despite the weak dollar vs. the euro. They try and make it up with options but who really needs most of that stuff anyway for a typical commute? Unlike most other brands (incl. Merc) BMW does have the advantage of getting more than wholesale for their cars. Design note - gotta love those 16x9 rear displays!
