New BMW Trademark Filings Signal Two New Model Series?
BMW Project i to create new concepts for cars in megacities

More questions than answers

According to a recent report, BMW has filed a host of new trademark registrations.

First and foremost, BMW registered i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8, i9 and E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E8, E9.  The company also applied for M 50 d, Urbanic, Gran Coupe, Compactive, and Compactive Tourer.

While details are limited, BMWBlog is reporting an inside source has told them the M 50 d is a tri-turbo diesel, the Urbanic is a Mega City trim level (or something similar), the Gran Coupe may be a four-door coupe 6-Series, and the Compactive / Compactive Tourer are sporty crossovers based on the 1- / 3-Series. The source also said the i's are for the Project-i sub brand and the E's are for BMW's eDrive models.

Regardless, BMW may never use the names. By simply registering them, they serve as placeholders (in case BMW decides to add new models in the future), legal buffers (to prevent competitors from trying to use a similar naming structure), and distractions (if competitors don't know which ones will be used, they have to make assumptions).

They should rather do a four-door 5-series coupe to have a decent competitor to Mercedes CLS and Porsche Panamera.

They do "need" a 4-door-coupe' seeing as all the opposition has one (the ones you mentioned, adding the Audi A5, but without the Panamera which is in a different category I think). I agree with you, but like the opposition, it should be a new model, not a modified 5 series. Personally, I don't like the name Gran Coupe' but it sounds about right.

I guess Compactive is better than Compactor. Some marketing folks probably worked very hard on these names, had lunch brought in, etc.

true... they were very hard @ work... did they tried to hear how the entire name will sound? BMW COMPACTIVE TOURER??? Or are they entered the highly productive construction machinery industry? And combining those two words Compact and Active is not necessarily a good thing

Maybe the Gran coupe is the coupe version of its 5 Gran Turismo. I look forward for BMW's project i. Isetta anyone? BMW seriously need a lower brand to boost its production output volume by building cheaper cheerful compact cars for developing countries in India, China, South East Asia, South America, and Africa.
